I (Daiyuki) joined a game in progress on Gold difficulty, hosted by AkkAttack1 the game time was between 6:15 and 6:40 PM Mountain Time on February 28th. His weapons Revenant and Locust were doing insane amounts of damage and when pressed, he said he had extracted files and modded the weapons.

Just letting you guys know that it's apparently possible to cheat and someone already has.

This has been known and used since the 15th to the best of my knowledge. It exists on all of the consoles as well according to unverified sources.

I got the extractor myself so I could poke around and take a look at the setting myself. I didn't change anything though.

Apparently there are at least 8 multiplayer maps in the final game.

It's BS that all the variables are stored on client-side. A simple variable editor can get you infinite credits. A bit more digging can get you infinite cobra launchers and insane weapon damage. There're too many cheaters in the demo.

I hope variables will be on server-side in retail and BW will ban all the cheaters.

It -is- a demo, so I figure they want to use client machine power as much as possible. I can't imagine such a simple way to cheat would make it into retail, but it can't hurt to keep some light on the issue.

Oh trust me, they know about it.

They deleted a 20+ page modding thread here without a word as to why, and also someone had posted on the MP forum about all the things he was able to hack/unlock by modding the file.

They know, so now we're waiting to see the backlash to the modding community.

not surprised this might be the cause of why the drop system is getting ruined.
these people modifying or getting the items they wanted, and leaving us with stuck and repetitive packs..
yesterday I had my 8th starter pack and got the same on all of them.. goddamn exp on a maxed char..

Sigh, someone else modifying his files to get good equipment doesn't mean that you will get bad equipment to balance it. The file which decides what you get with a pack is on your pc. Other people can't change YOUR file.

Wow. And the "this is a demo" excuse giver, can you point to where it will be different in less than a week?

Why? because they have no intention of changing the way it's done, so they try to limit access to people.
Way to go!
Not only you won't prevent cheating, but you'll ban people who mod just to change their FOV or button setup.

did your weapons did insane damage as well? In case you had the Locust, or maybe even other weapons.

The odds are that since the game now has multiplayer that if we mod the single player game we will be banned from the game for cheating. Bioware was rather foolish to make a local configuration file be able to change an online portion of the game, esp. since that exact same file has been modded in both previous games by the community to alter things such as loadouts, powers, clothing, etc.

So if I enable the 360 controller via mods I can be banned? Is there a company statement supporting this claim?

And in the effort to address this "cheating", EA will make modding the single-player a bannable "offense", and use Origin to enforce it.

They appear to have removed the entire thread about modding in the demo -- at least, my bookmark just takes me to a page that says I have no permission to access it...

Officially?  No.

Unofficially?  Why else would they delete the modding thread we had going unless they were going to crack down on it, especially when you consider modding that file affects both SP and MP games, and they aren't going to want mass scale cheating and hacking in MP.

Easiest way to solve it is to blanket ban all mods period and scan for changes to key game files on launch, which Origin would make very easy to do.

There's no way to know 100% for sure yet, but EA isn't exactly known for being a "warm and fuzzy" gaming company.

The replayability of Bioware games (DA and ME series) drops below the line where it's worth the price of the game, if there's no modding.

You have to understand they don't have the resources or money to worry about the Demo cheating players. The best thing you can do is just disconnect and join another game.

It is a Demo, an older build that has already been updated and is probably being worked on for release to patch it up.

Why would they waste time on the Demo when they have the full version of the game to worry about.

Just have to wait and see then. If modding the controller to work or changing FOV is going to get you banned I'll let someone else find out.

The Demo build is from the 18th of January. The release build is from the third of this month.

The fix is simple, just have multi reference a separate file that gets hash checked on startup and periodically during multiplayer to a central server. Of course, then they would have to actually set up a powerful enough server to do that.

What really needs to happen is that the entire thing needs to be moved to a server side setup for multi. On consoles Bio would have to maintain the servers, on PC setup a dedicated server program which can run 4-5 games at once and run a master server list like Steam. Of course, that would require common sense and good programming, which since it's run through EA's Origin will mean little of either.

When people say mass effect needs a server it makes my brain explode.

^ This.

Maintaining a server network for a game with a community of this magnitude would be massively expensive and time consuming. Since we can safely assume that DLC takes priority over other considerations after release, switching to a server side system is unlikely.

Besides, the storm over the endings is going to drown out any multiplayer complaints that rise to the surface.

And people said I was being silly and paranoid when I said that multiplayer meant the end of Bioware being even neutral / blase on modding, and that it would be anti-mod-city from here on out.

Any word on if we'll be allowed to change the coalesced file for the single player campaign without getting banned? All I see are threads getting deleted and no mention of how this design flaw is going to be handled.
