Without at least asking the other players.

Depends, maybe those three people you just joined had a good streak going and wanted to up the challenge and you just got there before they could change. Happened a few times with us, though we are kind enough to announce the change so people can change their minds.

How is that a 'depends?'

If *they* decided to up the difficulty, that would mean the host asked the players. There would be communication instead of a silver game followed by a gold one with no indication that was going to happen.

You can see the change while you're in the lobby. You then have the choice to leave or stay, it's not as if you're locked in a game and can't leave if you need/want to.

This is why the lobby needs text chat.

The "depends" was the acknowledgement of the possibility on malicious host that just one-up the difficulty because they feel like it without caring for others or only having consulted with their close teamates where you couldn't participate (TS, xFire, others) and simply didn't care to announce it. Those people would be annoying, that's where you are correct and where I wanted to show empathy towards.
