Don't believe the "rage" in BSN. Game forums, BSN especially, are an echo chamber that tends to spotlight the most vocal (who are often the most implacable) gamers. The silent majority (those who quietly purchase and enjoy the game) are often not captured on gaming forums.

DA2 also had a metric s***ton of pre-orders.

Get the people to buy your product...What happens after is the interesting bit.

DA2's numbers read like someone falling off a cliff.

Even if ME3 does twice as well as ME2, it still likely cost a lot more to make and advertise.

But with each release Biowares reputation seems to erode of late.

Quite true. Advertising alone won't save the game.

No, it won't.

Shipped doesn't mean sold Ringo.

Oops. Well at least Bethesda is given all the time in the world for them to release their own games.

DA2 and TOR already failed.

This might sell decently at first. If it's as bad as it seems, it'll die out really quickly.

Heh. Hate to break it to you, but DA2 was quite commercially successful. And ME3 will have very long legs due to the multiplayer, which has been getting rave reviews.

DA2 didn't even sell well compared to DA:O.

Thing is Origins took what 6-7 years to complete? DA2 took 18 months. It made just as much if not more money with a smaller schedule and budget.

And costed them a lot of long term fans in the process. Was it worthy?

Although, I don't get what is this "loyalty" to a game developer about. I love many games from many developers and when they do something bad, I say so and don't play it. I actually played DA2 and it is not so bad but the distance they took from all that made Origins a masterpiece is visible. It may not have failed commercially but it did fail in making people craving for DA3.

I love Blizzard's games but I never touched WoW. It's against my religion (not but I like saying it.. more like against my sense as consumer) to pay monthly fees to play a game. There are amazing games which are multiplayer and FTP. I love Star Wars but only ep. IV to VII and they spawn great flight combat sim games. TOR? I liked NWN better than Kotor. I couldn't finish Kotor 2... got bored and was already sad it didn't continue my Kotor 1 char's story.

I don't expect ME3 to fail because the DEMO gave us at least an amazing mplayer. And since it will be the end of our Shepards story, whatever end it is it will give me some closure. Might be a fail to new entrants to the series, no idea.

I'm really enjoying KoA with a pure fighter. I wish ME had the same responsiveness to controls and separated controls for sprint/roll/interact as KoA has. (no cover though since it's not a shooter but if it were I'm sure the controls would be a lot better than ME's). It is really a pity though that KoA is no more than a filler to me. I can't help but skipping all dialogues and some of them are not that bad. It's just too much and I want to finish the game before ME3 is out!

Yeah, this game is not going to fail. There's a lot of hype, and they changed enough to draw in new players. It'll do well in the market and probably well in the reviews. However, it won't be a contender for GOTY, there are too many other games coming out that will have momentum after release that will have people talking a lot months after they're out.

Like what?

GTA5 isn't coming this year. BioShock: Infinite who knows when. Diablo 3 is just for PC. Max Payne 3 although excellent & superb game isn't GOTY material. Same goes for Hitman. Far Cry 3 is generic no soul shooter. Assasins Creed 3 will be forgotten in one month just like AC:R ( awesome game btw.)

So tell me, what AAA game will be better then ME3 so it can push ME3 from getting GOTY.

Its nice to know you already know exactly how these games will be recieved.......
Every single one of those have GOTY potential written all over it just cause you have your fanboy goggles doesn't mean squat.
Also Dragon's Dogma

Oh yes! Looking forward to that one.

Plays like a less "hands off" White Knight Story.

skyrim made millions sale on Steam, hell it has been the number one selling game on Steam since the release, and Steam sales never counted as total sale numbers, so 10 million skyrim sales is legit claim.

OMG. Kotor 2 is amazing

If you still have Kotor 2 then please go play it with this.

It has such a great story and like anything Obsidian improved upon the original.

I don't see how a game not being GoTY in Gamespot's or other websites awards make them a failure. TW2 did not win in any major western website but it is still the best game of 2011 by a large margin. (not that large when Skyrim comes into the picture but still, those are both great games and I'm lucky I can enjoy them both)

"So what happens to Bioware if ME3 fails?"

It folds, which starts the beginning of the climatic Gaming Crash of the The twenty teens. Major companies fold except those who provide online services, and the general quality of all games degrade to the point where independent games pull more current than supposed AAA titles. Except due to the stigma of "Big Companies killing little ones."

Nobody gets off the ground for fear for how it will destroy their company image. All gaming besides MMOs and E-sports slip back into the background of media culture - leaving the entirty of grown gaming community starved for something of the production quality they have seemingly grown fat on.

... too much wishful thinking?

Realistically? Nothing major. A new IP from a new company will surface and bandwagon fans will jump ship. Bioware will still keep a loyal base while shedding the fat, EA or some other large publishing company will scoup up said new developer and repeat process, making a profit off of someone else's dreams while corrupting them to appeal to wider audiences to make more money. The cycle will continue with an eventual turn to Gaming as a Service rather than a product.

Eventually you'll likely see large companies stop selling games entirely, but cost you a subscription to access specific libraries of free games, with added charges for their specific high-value content. Subscribe for some hand-me-down titles, AAA Games as DLC. (on top of paying for expansions).

Why? Because you will buy it. You're addicted to the medium.

It does matter actually, a lot more then you think. Mass Effect 2 for instance will be added into the Smithsonian Museum of Art whereas neither Witcher 1 or 2 will be.

Mass Effect 2 seriously made it into there?

If Planescape:Torment didn't then well I don't wanna think about it.

no, EA pulled its games off Steam, you might say origin is there, but right now Steam is the driving force of the returning of PC gaming, it self took more than 80% of digital distribution market, Origin wishes it could be Steam, but it wont be, at least not any time soon

Before EA did that the ME games and DA games were available for sale there.

EDIT: ME2, ME1 and DA:O are still available on steam.

Not really. I really wish I could just sit here and laugh at all the negativity. But actually I like the franchise too much to laugh it off.

Stanley, how come companies like Blizzard can take as long as they damn please to make a game? What's preventing Bioware from doing the same?

Because Blizzard ist a subsidiary of Activision-Blizzard. Activision-Blizzard itself is owned by french Company Vivendi SA. (Vivendi is much, much, bigger then EA ever will be)

Still wondering if I should give KoA a shot. But honestly, what I hear about the story is less than a selling argument. A couple of years ago I would still jump on any RPG no matter how bad it is. But I have come to look more on quality after a long row of disappointment especially on the story and character side of games. I find it kind of funny that they get a writer like R.A. Salvatore and then make a game that is mostly slapped for the story.

I enjoyed the story , but then I'm familiar with the Irish mythology. It's good enough for a sandbox game I'd say. The real joy of the game is in the exploring and hands on combat system.

KOA is a very solid skeleton that could have been fleshed out more in any number of ways. For example, the engine has no problem supporting companions, but they never added any. Like any sand box game you spend a lot of time away from the "story".

The faction quests are really good too, but I stopped doing the sidequests around half way. Took me 60 hours to finish the game as a Mage and as an ArchMage I kicked much ass. The Rogue and Warrior combat is very different and I will replay it at some point and finish up the trophies.

KoA is so far removed from sandbox or exploration its not even funny.
All those corridors in between each zone I swear its like a damn MMO.  The extremely forgettable story doesn't help things either.  If it weren't for the combat I wouldn't have gotten as far as I did.  I regret getting this game but at least it wasn't a total waste.

I really get what you're saying. However, you're supposed to play a role as a customer here and, being impressed by trailers which have little to do with the actual game doesn't support that role.

You're doing more harm than good to your loved series by blindly purchasing products (not talking about you personally) and judging just by faith (that goes to you : P)
