Stanley, how come companies like Blizzard can take as long as they damn please to make a game? What's preventing Bioware from doing the same?
Just guessing, of course, since I don't know their inner workings, but it makes a whole lot of sense: fewer, bigger titles, popular franchises, a gigantic fanbase in an even bigger potential market, and past successes. Also, regular money coming in from one of their ongoing workhorse titles.
But I'm sure they have their issues with deadlines and releases; their cycles are just a lot longer than everyone else's and somewhat sustainable.
Bioware is not just Bioware, they are under EA, and if EA is enforcing a deadline, Bioware will need to make the best of it.
Blizzard however....
Blizzard knows their succes hinges on their franchises with huge fanbases. If they dont deliever a game with the upmost quality, then their whole company will suffer, fans will never forget if they make a big mistake, because their games are so good.
They also got a vast amount of resources to make sure they can pos-prone deadlines, if they dont feel like they are ready now. They rather make the most perfected game they can without waiting too long, than release a game when it is good enough.
Which is actually rather surprising since they joined with Activision, who we all know how works. It seems Blizzard have a pretty good leash on them, when it comes to deadlines in the end.
tl:dr Blizzard games are built on their succes of never failing and "too-big-to-fail" games, they must be hits or it could be catastrophical.
