Stanley, how come companies like Blizzard can take as long as they damn please to make a game? What's preventing Bioware from doing the same?

Blizzard? The same guys who made an expansion a year ago, dropped three patches and are now about to hold a press release about their newest expansion next month?

THAT Blizzard?

I love you stanley. I think that no matter what any one says, you guys have really good public relations, especially when you come out and give a detailed and thorough response such as the one I am quoting. Kudos :)

most of the time i feel like this, but there's still the flip side sometimes where threads about important issues get locked or deleted or the mods can't or won't give a clear response about bioware or ea and their policies. i realize sometimes a forum mod simply isn't allowed to talk about certain things, but it would be nice to have answers to a few questions before i drop full price on the game.

like if i mod my field of view in single player, will origin detect that and ban me from all the games i have through origin?

there are a lot of legitimate questions that get locked down or just deleted. but not giving an answer is an answer in and of itself. it leads to the assumption(correct or not) that they refuse to answer because they know people will not like the answer, and may not spend the money on the game to find out.

for me the lack of answers to questions like this means i'll be waiting to drop money on ME3 for a few weeks until i find a lot more about how origin REALLY works on live release of ME3.

Let me tell you this, did Mass Effect 1 suck? Did Mass Effect 2 Suck?

Answer is a wide majority would say No, including me. I'm pretty sure ME3 will definitely not suck.

Yes, that Blizzard. I think you misunderstood my question. You are aware of the development time for StarCraft II, right? It started in 2003 and was announced in 2007, and was not released until 2011, a full 4 years after announcement and 8 years after commencing development. And the original StarCraft and its expansion were released in 1998, meaning a gap of 13 years between the first and second iterations of the franchise. Compare this to Mass Effect 3, which is being released 2 years after Mass Effect 2.

By my estimate, if there is a StarCraft III, it will probably be released around 2020.

The company's has a general habit of not making hard release dates for their games, preferring to abide by a "we'll release it when it's done" mentality? Making patches and additional content ≠ new games. If they started a new IP or game, it would take about a decade (plus or minus some years) for the project to come to fruition.

Just guessing, of course, since I don't know their inner workings, but it makes a whole lot of sense: fewer, bigger titles, popular franchises, a gigantic fanbase in an even bigger potential market, and past successes. Also, regular money coming in from one of their ongoing workhorse titles.

But I'm sure they have their issues with deadlines and releases; their cycles are just a lot longer than everyone else's and somewhat sustainable.

because blizzard has other sources of income that does not depend on their current game development. Blizzard has WoW and Valve has Steam.

Bioware has always relied upon investors, who can make demands such as deadlines and minimum profit margins.

If it fails we can always give it the Star Control 3 treatment.

Which is to say, I wonder when they'll get around to making Star Control 3?

Hypothetically, if it were to fail, Bioware Edmonton would probably get shut down.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :crying:

Say what you want about Bioware but Bioware Edmonton is the core of Bioware. They go... gosh, the company just won't be the same.

Here's the thing....how do you define failure for a game like ME3? Sales figures? Metacritic scores? GOTY nominations? Forum rage?

Odds are the game will sell extremely well and will be well reviewed. And besides Bioshock Infinite there aren't any other strong contenders for GOTY that have a chance of beating ME3 if it reviews well.

you hit it on the head Stanley
Bliz and Valve have cash cows in WoW and Steam
so they can take YEARS to work on a new game
they also have multiple teams as im sure Bioware does

BioWare is part of EA now. They are basically...McDonald's. They aren't going anywhere. BioWare's biggest risk is their reputation. For years they have been known as some of the greatest storytellers in gaming. If ME3 doesn't live up to that expectation, especially so zoon after the critical disappointment that was DA2, then they are going to take a whupping. It will make it very hard to hype up any new IP the way that the ME, and DA franchises were hyped up.

I haven't seen a firm date for GTA V.  Late last year it was rumored the game would come out before E3 2012.  The last I heard it wasn't coming out unitl Q1 2013.

If Dragon Age II could sell alright, MEIII's certainly in no danger, and they're still making a DAIII. ME3 certainly isn't going to fail, and at most, won't sell as well as the devs/publisher/backers would hope. That was the case with DAII.

its  just a bunch of kids wanting to cause unrest and start crap just to get attention because their mother and father either spoiled them to much or locked them in a closet till they were 19 and kicked them out and are now selling their boby to pay for their addiction to starting crap on forums
