Stanley, how come companies like Blizzard can take as long as they damn please to make a game? What's preventing Bioware from doing the same?
Blizzard? The same guys who made an expansion a year ago, dropped three patches and are now about to hold a press release about their newest expansion next month?
THAT Blizzard?
Yes, that Blizzard. I think you misunderstood my question. You are aware of the development time for StarCraft II, right? It started in 2003 and was announced in 2007, and was not released until 2011, a full 4 years after announcement and 8 years after commencing development. And the original StarCraft and its expansion were released in 1998, meaning a gap of 13 years between the first and second iterations of the franchise. Compare this to Mass Effect 3, which is being released 2 years after Mass Effect 2.
By my estimate, if there is a StarCraft III, it will probably be released around 2020.
The company's has a general habit of not making hard release dates for their games, preferring to abide by a "we'll release it when it's done" mentality? Making patches and additional content ≠ new games. If they started a new IP or game, it would take about a decade (plus or minus some years) for the project to come to fruition.
