Destination. A bad destination invalidates everything you did to get there.
Example to the contary: Reproduction.
The fact that you failed to have a child does not invalidate the fact that you got laid in the attempt.
A more apt example would be IVF. If you go through an expensive process to have a child and it doesn't work, was it worth it?

Like say... The Monkey Island series, Dragon Age Origins, Jade Empire, Kotor, God of War (debatable), The Elder Scrolls, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate, Heavy Rain, Batman Arkham Asylum & Arkham City...

Going from bad country to good country. You know that good country is a good country. So the journey doesn't matter. It's irrelevant. Who cares what happens, you made it to your future home where you will most likely succeed. Desination is what's better there.
In Mass Effect you are going to the inevitable, you have to fight.
The Reapers are coming, you have no more control over that. They are powerful and have lived longer than most life began at the cellular level.
You have to fight them you have to or try to last it out which by history you found out that doesn't work, and sacrifices are going to have to happen to even have a chance of winning. You lost your ship, your friends? The destination was the fight, and you can not expect to fight without losses.
So this is where the journey is better in my eyes. Everyone you made friends with and trusted. People who you would give your life up for.
You fought along side them too face the destination that no matter what road you took you would have to end there. In this situation I care more about the journey.
When I talk about this great series in ten years from now, I will talk about the characers and dialog. The places you had to go and fights you had to fight. From the start I knew people would have to eventually die and that is why I cared and care so much for the characters I will be spending another fine story with.

Yes but the series has always been about choice. Should there be a bitter sweet ending yes but there should also be the traditional "happy" ending as well as the god did you mess that up ending.
Not every problem has a solution. Charm dialog can't save everyone.
It show's how no one is perfect, that there is not one person in this world can do everything right. This is a internal battle Shepard has had since the start.
The series starts with him looking out the window in space at Earth and ends with him most likely in the same fashion.

Destination is what the journey is for. If the Destination is crap than your just journeying towards crap.
I wouldn't put a fight with the Reapers near anything good on any scale.

My favorite part of ME1? Getting Saren to shoot himself and then having the Alliance save the Destiny Ascension.
My favorite part of ME2? Blowing up the base and telling the Illusive Man where to shove his orders.
My favorite part of the ME IP has always been the setting and story. Mordin's great not just for his mannerisms, but for putting a face to the genophage. Legion's great not because he's wearing Shepard's armor, but for the insight he offers about the Geth.
If I come to talk about this series a decade from now it'll be to say that it was great, but it was let down quite a bit by the ending in ME3.

Both.
So few things in life are such concrete absolutes.
Agreed. Everything about Mass Effect is why I play. The shooting, the talking, the running, the stiff dancing which is honestly no better then me (can't dance period). The story, with how I do certain actions, more then Fable, or Fallout. How I can still talk certain interactions down with precision, rather then dropping Cains.
Romance not so much, I like conversation and plot, but the majority of it is passing time. When I was younger it was a little more enjoyable, now I just see greys and blacks, and no substance on top of it.
Many of the reasons why I'm not irritated by the endings so far.

Through commander Shepard's actions, it could result in the Earth being devastated after the war or surviving for the humans to rebuild. Through command Shepard's sacrifice, every species in the galaxy has a chance of survival. Even if Shepard dies, this isn't necessarily a depressing ending. To me, this ending gives you a sense of hope, to know that the species in the world can repair the damage, rebuild their war-torn cities, and once again attempt to develop technologies that will allow the existence of a galactic community.
When I finish the game, I'll be wondering, curious as to how the galaxy will develop once again. If this game ended with everyone surviving, everything is perfect and all is good after a galactic war, there won't a need to think at all. This ending will just be another one of those generic, predictable and forgettable ones.

A awesome ending can make it more memorable but the journey is where 95% of the fun lies.
I sure hope not.fearan1 wrote...
I really lean to thinking we will see post game DLC for a complete ending .
