The leaked endings are giving some people a sour taste in their mouths, mostly due to the lack of a "happy" resolution. Most of your squad are missing, Shepard is either dead or in a bad place, and the galaxy has been put into a dark age as the pale aura of the relays fade forever. This brings up an obvious question - Where does EA and Bioware go from there?
Sure you can go prequel territory and look at the world prior to the Reaper Crisis, but that would hardly be interesting, would it? Rachni wars or Turian Invasions pale in comparison to a galactic threat by an immemorial menace.
In order to proceed into a new territory of the ME universe, you need to find a threat just as, if not more fear inducing as the Reapers. Such a threat needs to be just an ancient and nefarious as the Reapers, and should raise questions on just who the Reapers were and what there true goals were.
Right now, all we know of the Reapers are that they believe they have "always existed" (i.e. are so ancient that a time before themselves seems irrelevant or impossible) and that they have the express goal of harvesting the galaxy to produce new Reapers. Consuming the inhabitants of the Milky Way allow the Reapers to reproduce.
Reproduction would be enough of a goal for most creatures, after all, it's good enough for humans and animals on Earth, but the Reapers are different. They did not evolve normally, sentient machines are not just born from nature through abiogenesis, but instead are creatured. this doesn't mean that they need an external creator, ala the Geth with the Quarians, but they could have arisen through an environment so hostile that they only way their species could survive would be to meld themselves with machines.
So, why do they reproduce? They don't seem to age and die, they have no natural predators in the milky way to attend to, so what is their goal? There must be something out there, extragalactic, which has threatened Reapers existence. It could be the very aggitating factor which produced them into what they are in the first place. Perhaps the Reapers destruction has produced a void in which this greater menance can return, no longer kept at bay by their former enemies.
