so I need the kaiden achiev and want Ash to survive virmire. Is it possible to unlock this before the virmire quest?

I'm not sure, but I think it should be, if you do EVERYTHING with Kaidan prior to that point. All the side quests on the Citadel, all the side quests on Feros, everything on Noveria.
