Honestly...I can't say I have. I have found uses for all other weapon types but SMGs just seem inferior in every conceivable way.
Has anyone found any use for SMGs? apart from looking cool on your hip?

SMG is useful for putting a lot of rounds into something with very little weight.
Basically, it's there for you until you get the Carnifex.
Works far better at close range, mind you.

They are fun on Bronze and Silver when you want to try something different. Also Quarian Engineer gets a weight bonus for them... so that's a reason even if not a good one.
Of course they aren't as good as OPistols. or even ARs.

The tempest is usable. The recoil takes some time to adjust to, but once you start to control the recoil as second nature, the tempest becomes a rather useful weapon at X. It has A LOT of rounds per clip.

I experimented with using only an SMG recently and found that they're great for close-quarter firefights, mainly because it can be difficult tracking some of the more mobile enemies, such as Nemeses, with a pistol or shotgun. Also helpful for providing some quick suppressive fire to keep enemies in cover when you find yourself surrounded and out in the open as a Vanguard, or any tank class. You do have to get used to whittling them down instead of just one-shotting them though.

I use the Tempest on my (human) infiltrator to take out shields on Atlases, but that's it.

I like my tempest X. It gives a 200% weight bonus in many classes and I never worry about ammo. It also can kill a lot with one clip (at least on silver it can kill 4 soldiers from afar without reloading and using a scope). It's good in close quarters combat without aiming and is good from afar when using a scope upgrade. It does however have a problem, it simply takes too much time in killing which I guess it can be a problem in gold challenges but for a support class shouldn't be a problem. With the proper ammo it should be good at crowd controlling. I also use it for atlas shields.
In fact it is the weapon I've been using the most. Use it in my quarian engineer, on my drell vanguard and my human sentinel.

I use it as a backup weapon, for providing cover fire for colleagues and for taking out shields on Atlases. It's high recoil and terrible accuracy means I hardly kill anything with it, but that's what my Mantis/Carnifex is for.

I have a Locust II on my turian sentinel and it seems to work very well. It gets a lot of rounds off and it's very accurate for an SMG. Good for laying down suppression fire during a retreat or for painting a cloaked Phantoms so that another teammate can take a killing shot.

I've read people saying its no longer a shield/barrier killer. Is that true?

I sometimes carry one around for a back up gun. Unless they implement the 1.25 multiplier against shields and barriers, I don't foresee much main weapon play.

i see no reason to bring them. they don't kill fast enough to make a difference.

The tempest is definitely the best one right now. The locust is not bad either, but then my Tempest is a X, my Locust is a I. Still, neither one is as good as an Avenger X, which is way more accurate, does more damage at mid-long range, and weighs only a fraction more.

The tempest can take down guardians. Spray near their face and they get stunned and die. Other weapons it is most difficult, except for shotguns. So if you want to be light take an SMG Tempest.
The Tempest does in fact keep Phantoms at bay because of how large your mag is. Since you do not have to reload you can shoot short controlled bursts and the Phantom will just sit there.

I think they should make the SMGs better at taking down barriers and shields, because even the pistols can do that with the same efficiency.

tempest spray on phantoms(when at health) will keep them cart wheeling/break their swords.

I use my hornet on my infiltrator when the enemies get close, or my widows out of ammo.

I find it to simply be a "fun" weapon. The tempest and hornet are very fun weapons to just shoot. The shuriken is by far my least favorite gun, though.

Ammo capacity and weight. SMG's are the weapon type you want if you never want to run out of ammo. Between the extended magazines and the upgrade that has a % chance for not using a shot, you can fire an SMG for a really long time.
They make a great back-up weapon. If you're a Mantis sniper and you want to keep your cooldown low but you still want a backup weapon that you'll never run out of ammo for, the Shuriken and Tempest can both fill that niche.
They're not meant to be used as primary weapons. If you're going to carry an SMG, you should at the very least also have a pistol.

Tempest is excellent for spraying anywhere you suspect a Phantom to be. If there is, you saturated the area enough to make its camouflage flicker, meaing you won't lose sight of it again if you just keep spraying.
Though the general SMG damage output pales in comparision to other weapon types, the extremely low weight makes them (read: the Tempest) for valuable sidearms. Also, they are indeed quite thorough with shields, so if you don't have any powers to adequately deal with shields (Human Sentinel and Quarian Engineer, I am looking at you!) in the time you seem appropriate, they can be useful. Also, the Shuriken packs a good punch and should not get overlooked, though it's true, once you have the better pistols, only the Tempest has any real value as described above.

Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but you can mail slot better with the revenant in burst fire than you can with even the most accurate smg. The only PRACTICAL use for an smg is to apply a high level ammo mod like Disruptor in very short order to a target at very close range. Anything else is done better by another weapon or class of weapon.
While I have taken my all pink Krogan with his Locust or Tempest X around for $h!+s and giggles, they really serve no practical purpose on anything above bronze. The fact that maxed out ARs are pretty light and there are three pistols that make any SMG a joke doesn't help.

As it stands now most of the mods for smg's are ammo related. I'm hoping that with more mods available we can find a better combination to give smg's a more defined niche.
