"The Mako Segment"

I was on one of many planets and got out of the vehicle that most probably stayed in for there playthrough

But I just started running on foot and it took me a long time to reach a enemy hideout base for example

Just 2 planets in scale that can be covered by foot has to be about the size of lets say Skyrim when it comes to the field over world map

And there are many planets to explore!

It's very undetailed. That's why they can have such large maps. When you're driving around in the Mako, it's slightly less obvious (the camera is zoomed out more) but on foot it's VERY obvious! The only things on the planets are the odd mercenary base or crashed satellite!

EDIT: I forgot, also crazy-shaped mountains.

Aye. It's kinda boring, but it's excellent in terms of immersion. ME1 maps are just fugging massive. It really does give you the scale you would expect with an intergalactic quest. ME2 maps are detailed, but small enough that it feels like you can fit the whole game in a shopping mall. On the down side, that means a fug load of walking and running, and the elevator rides. I am not sure what's worse - a large map that take ages to run through, or a small map that breaks the immersion.

ME2 wins it for me simply because they don't all look the same, and the barriers are more natural (although having non-linear missions was a big plus in ME1's favour). Overlord gave a nice combination of the two but I suppose it would take far too long to go to that level of detail for every planet.

Personally I found that the saminess broke the immersion more. When the time and effort was available though (the Citadel) ME1 won hands down for location.
