Heh.  The title of this thread reminds me of the announcer in Gauntlet: "Warrior needs food badly!"

Anyway... no, this isn't a "let's bash the Vanguard" thread.  I'm the Vanguard in question here and I need help on how to effectively play the class.

I've always played a Vanguard in single player, but the MP game is different.  Here I suck at it.

So I'm looking for advice on how best to utilize this class from players who've successfully played as a Vanguard.

As of right now, I believe my Human Female Vanguard is either LVL4 or LVL5.  I'd need to check, but she's definitely a low level at this point.  I've been concentrating on Biotic Charge and Nova, with slightly less points pumped into Shockwave.

I don't know if it's because my character is such a low level, but when I do the normal Vanguard stuff, I tend to die really quickly.

Yes, this is on Bronze; if my character were to enter Silver or Gold, she'd save everyone time by impaling herself on her omnitool.

Thanks ahead of time!

simply put, charge and nova are you kill skills, hit an enemy with charge then follow up with a nova, and if need it hit them with a heavy melee. keep in mind that nova doesnt have a cool down but drains all of your shields, so as soon as you can use charge again to quickly regain them, these are the basics, take time to develop timing in using these 2 skills quickly. also use shockwave as you anti guardain weapon, it will knock there sheilds aside for a sec giving you a clear shot at them. also i would suggest using only a rilfe, a mattdoc without a cope and a extened clip and recoil reduction mods. the rest is really up to you

SP should teach you how to Charge without getting flattened instantly, so I'll just zip over that.

Ultimately, you want to max Charge & Nova, then work on Fitness & Alliance Training (preferably Fitness for Shields & Melee Damage).

To this end, you want to Charge (then depending on recharge times), melee/shoot, Nova, Charge.

Never Nova when there's nothing to Charge.

Take only a Heavy Pistol, this maximizes your recharge times to up to 200% (mine sits at 180% I believe).

Shockwave is, for the most part, useless against Cerberus...I can't speak for the other enemies however I imagine even Charge & Nova work better than Shockwave against the Reaper forces.

Turrets? Charge, shoot, Nova, Charge, shoot, Nova. If it isn't down by now? /shrug, just Charge & Nova again! You can take a massive beating, abuse that fact.

That said, ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings. Never Charge instantly when a wave begins, that's your death sentence right there. Charge the first target to appear, rocket to the face from Atlas out of sight.

All that said? At such a low level, hang back, learn when to charge, get into cover. You NEED shields, melee damage & good recharge on Charge & Nova so that you can effectively spam them. Once you get Charge, Nova & Fitness maxed out, you'll be the powerhouse you're anticipating.

At those levels it was tough to play but here's what I suggest use a katana shotgun and head snipe the target you've just charged like a guardian or engineer. Charge only single targets because you will get mobbed. Nova only when you are sure it will finsih off closeby enemies. Oh and stick close to the group so they can rez you because lone wolfing at low levels = death. Once you get more levels and better equipment I think you can handle it.

Here is the classic vanguard: Scimitar Shotgun, nothing else.

If enemies are close or around a corner: run in, have one aimed, nova, charge and nova, run out.
If enemies are at distance: charge, shotgun, nova, repeat.
Don´t charge when multiple enemies are not clustered close enough to be in reach of nova.
Don´t charge when a turret is around.

You should practice shotgun headshots in general, and directly after charge.
On higher difficult levels it is important to use the stagger animation to do additional shotgun damage or reposition quickly or to hit and run.

Well, first of all don't put any points in Shockwave or you won't be able to max out the other powers/skills which, at least for me, is a necessity.

What I'd suggest for the powers: Go for greater area, not greater damage. Go for 100% against shield/barrier/armor on Nova and +50% barrier restore on Charge. The latter is one of the points why it feels like you suck on lower levels. The Vanguard doesn't really work properly up to a certain level.

From my experiences on Gold you should go for Dual Nova instead of recharge bonus as this will allow you greater flexibility.

Go mostly for Shield and Health on Fitness/Alliance. Melee damage isn't necessary. Neither is weight capacity if you roll with a pistol only. Go for the damage instead.

Only take the Carnifex with you if you have it. If not, take the Shuriken for now - a burst to the head solves most things.

As for the playstyle: Depends on difficulty and situation. Basics are Charge -> burst to the head -> Single Nova - even if there's no enemy around as it will give you short immunity while waiting on the Charge CD. If you still have to wait for Charge to cool down, sideroll or another Nova if you certain you'll have a target to charge immediately once it's possible.
Might go for a Nova Cancel instead, though.

Some tips against certain enemies:

Guardian: Charge + immediate Headshot (or two on Gold)
Phantom: Charge, backroll, Nova, Sideroll, Charge. Repeat. Might squeeze a headshot in if you have idle time and take a short-cut.
Atlas: Charge and Nova from behind or draw Aggro with Nova Canceling if in front and let your teammates handle it.
Turret: GTFO and attack from cover. Doesn't take too long with a Carnifex though.

Only use pistols or smgs so you can charge often. As soon as you have the weapon reduction weight, you can start carrying shotguns or mattocks. Once you charge, use nova. When your barriers are down, charge. Charge lone enemies and only charge guardians if they are facing the other way; they can bash and stagger you to death. Once you maxed charge and nova, you can charge anything or anyone. Never charge a herd of enemy when there's a turret around them. You will gO down instantly if you do.

Shockwave can be... usable only if you reach level 5 and get the Reach upgrade. The range of it is just utterly ridiculous, especially if you're used to the Shockwave in ME2. So I'd say, it's not worth getting, or at least not too high. The only time it can be useful is when you hold a position (i.e. hacking the terminal type missions) and Guardians are coming at you and you don't want to Charge/Nova out, but Shockwave then shoot.

But I usually just Charge out instead and shoot them in the face. It also works, most of the time.
Whenever I accidentally cast a Shockwave, I just die. :P

Anyhow, there are people who use the 25% chance upgrades, I used the others. I just love Nova's Pierce, it essentially makes me a turret/phantom killer.

By the way, with the right upgrades and a heavy pistol like Predator, your recharge speed bonus is 200% and with Nova's recharge bonus you can cast Charge almost instantly after a Nova.
It's amazing, really.
