Since Mass Effect's release, I've likely finished double digit playthroughs.   The first half dozen or so I mostly went to marked areas on Planet maps and only detoured to snag minerals if they popped up on the radar.

Has anyone found anything that really suprised them or of major interest that weren't even on the radar by exploring additional areas of the map.

Since I've started doing so, I was shocked to actually find the occasional building with stuff in it, more Thresher Maws and the occasional pirate band.  I didn't even realize there was a planet with 2 Thresher Maws.

It is quite interesting once you start looking around. There's even little "stories" that are implied by some of the unmarked things you find. One I particularly liked was where you could find a mining camp, get some data on the location of mineral deposits from their computers, and then you can actually find the body of one of the miners near one of the mineral deposits, where they evidently were killed while surveying. It was just interesting to have that little glimpse into someone's life.

Some other interesting ones, especially if you're looking for extra XP, is occasional mercenary outposts that aren't marked. Or on Luna, did you know there's actually a second set of gun turrets away from the main facility? The other interesting thing is that you can occasionally come across the rachni's song, if you go to certain spots and wait and listen.

I think I've been to all of the side things. I used the planet maps on the wiki to find everything.

There are a few lootable unmarked shacks around as well as several unmarked Rachni colonies (with brood warriors) that are good for XP hunting.

There are two additional sets of turrets.

@Loudy, basically there is something for every planet, unless its the exceptions that are limited by Paragon / Renegade path.

@Swenson, yeah I noticed those turrets on Luna, a couple playthrough's ago. I was shocked to see them, but bummed they had no significance.

@caradoc, I'm guessing the brood warrior ones are on the missions gained after Noveria.

Since this is a non-spoiler forum, I can't disclose any further, but you can check the Wiki.

That one does not ring a bell unless it happened to be a Salarian or something... will keep eyes peeled.

I remember finding a fossil of something... I think it was during the Geth missions on a Red planet in the Armstrong cluster.
