First playthrough I was a mage with Morrigan, Alistair and Zevran. Alistair learned all the shield skills, zevran focused on the backstabbing that he's famous for, and Morrigan learned a good range of damage and incapacitating spells (as well as the basic heal spell). My main guy was pretty much an inferior Morrigan, except he had the spirit healer range of spells.
Now I'm playing a dwarven rogue with Sten, Leliana and Wynne

As my Giant Sword wielding human noble I have the stereotypical party of Alistair, Leliana and Wynne. Al as a tank, he's great for soaking up damage, Lel as the rogue and archer as she can unlock stuff and shoot from a distance, and Wynne as the mobile healer, assuming the stupid wench doesn't blow all her mana off in 5 seconds. Wench!
For my mage, I plan to take different characters in different places, and have a more flexible team.
For my City Elf murderess I plan to take Morrigan, possibly Sten or Oghren or both or Shale, yeah I have no idea really.

Me as a mage, focusing on damage and CC together with Wynne as a healer, Alistair as the tanky type and Leliana with her bow. Sort of the all-cute team

Same thing I ran, though my human noble is also sword and board. This is my all goody-goody team. We help people.
If you don't want Wynne chewing up her mana, either set her up to drink potions and carry plenty around or, and this is what I did, customize the AI to not cast damage dealing spells.
My other characters, I've got a the following groups going:
1. Mage (Arcane Warrior), Morrigan, Alistair, and Leliana (to be replaced with Zevran, once I get him). The plan for this group is simple, use the 2 mages to keep up two of the 3 weapon enchants and everyone dual wields, well, once Morrigan can get AW. For this, both mages focus heavily on the magic stat.
2. Rogue (ranger, bard), Leliana, Zevran, and Wynne - fun with critters, going to take all 3 rogues and make them rangers, have them plinking away with bows. A party of 7 (3 rogues, 1 mage, 3 animals) sounded like fun. 8 if I get the mage the animate dead spell.
3. Rogue (assassin, duelist), Zevran, Oghren, Morrigan - this rogue is a sociopath. Unless there's a benefit to keeping someone alive, if I get the option to kill, I kill. Characters choosen to cover the basics and be morally flexible with my homicidal ways.

Me as a DW Human Warrior, Morrigan doing the CC and damage, Wynne healing and Alistair tanking.
Second playthrough I'm looking at doing me as a Elven Mage, Morrigan, Zevran and Shale (gonna be evil

My first party was my human noble rogue (an archer) with Alistair as tank, Dog for melee DPS and Wynne for crowd control and healing. On my second run, I'm playing a mage with lots of healing and crowd control, with Morrigan for ranged damage, Shale as tank and Zevran for backstabbing and melee DPS. Both parties have worked well for me.
On the whole, I'd suggest taking at least one warrior, one rogue and one mage. The fourth party slot could probably be filled with anything - two mages give you a lot more firepower, but they also require more micro-managment.

Aaaww, I thought you would be asking for some Kiss-like makeup for your group. That would be awesome.

Despite being a hired assassin, Zevran isn't always so keen on taking the evil route.

Human Noble Rogue, Alistair, Shale, Morrigan
Elven Mage, Alistair, Zevran, Lilianna - at least that's the plan. I'll let you know if it's actually doable

IF I wouldnt keep restarting the game ...
My first party: Alistair, Leliana (romance), Wynne, MC (Elf Spirit Healer)
My second party: MC (Dwarf Tank), Ohgren, Zevran, Morrigan (romance)
First group is the good guys, second group the bad guys. Quite honestly I find Sten highly annoying, the dog not very funny, and as I strictly avoid all DLCs, I dont have Shale (and even if I had her, I wouldnt be interested in playing her).
