i just started playing last night (human worrior) and i just cannot equip a shield. every time i do, my sword gets taken away...??
i'm very very new to these games.

... your sword isnt... a "two" handed sword is it? dont make me explain this to you...

As the above poster said, a shield can only be equipped when wielding a one-handed sword/dagger.
A two-hand sword, as the name implies needs the two hands free (other than the equipped sword, of course).
Hover over the weapons in the Inventory menu to see whether or not they are two-handed and other information.

You need a one handed weapon to use on your main hand. (longsword, mace, axe, etc)
You likely have a weapon that requires both hands to wield. (greatsword, war axe, maul, etc)
