I believe this rule has been created because of the storm on these boards shortly after Dragon Age 2 and they want to prevent those same threads from starting with Mass Effect 3. I understand the concern that some people have with BioWare mods "over-stepping" the rules and locking/banning accounts over what seem to be trivial things, but you can thank your fellow community members that went way too far with expressing their displeasure in the past for posts that are thinly veiled death threats for that is going to attract a reaction like this.

^I wholeheartedly agree with Valkyre4. A lot of negativity can be avoided if you devs would just simply answer some questions for us. I understand that the devs possibly can't give away ALL information, but know that we invest in your products and therefore want to know what is to be expected. In other words: we want to know what we're buying. In most cases, just a short answer suffices. That's all we ask. Really.

And sometimes they can't comment on those "simple questions." Unfortunately, that's when fans seem to start in with the "entitlement" mentality and things go down hill rather quickly.

That's what I mentioned too in my previous post. I'm fully aware that the devs can't always comment on EVERYTHING, so to speak. And then things indeed get out of hand. :\\

Mods and OPs always set the tone of their sites through their actions or inaction's. Site rules are quite irrelevant since this place is their site, we're all guests, and any one of us can be ousted anytime without recourse and without explanation. Up till now it's been quite a free-for-all on all the BW forums while the Mods have pretty much chosen only to use their handydandy Lockdown tool since the Social network was created.
It was quite amusing to watch the pandemonium begin and then steadily increase even after the initial thrill and excitement of ME waned. Talimancers, Kaiden and Ash wars, but the Bazaar probably entrenched the unruly behavior firmly in the core of what BioWare Social was all about. Just my opinion.
On the downside, I quickly found it uncomfortable to post... anything, but I've continued to wander through from time to time to check for news and see how these forums were doing. I also saw many fine posters fade away and disappear. A very sad loss.

With this new breath of fresh air (fire and brimstone?) may I respectfully give some advise to the Mods of Social Bioware?
If you are a Mod then please MOD! That means occasionally backhanding some little bastid right off the forum. Who says Modding is all work? It can be fun too.
This is YOUR forum, not mine. Own it and make me feel like I'm at your place. I'll certainly behave appropriately if I KNOW I'm not lost in feral cyberspace.

Good luck with the new reborn(?) forums y'all. I'm curious to see if a new personality will emerge.

At first sight the statement seems to be harsh and a kind of rude. But i was unfamliliar with the bullying against Jennifer Hepler.
Bioware, it is your job to protect und support your employees, so i respect and support the changes.

In a way, BW is to blame for the unruly BSN posters. BW wrote and developed so many great and beloved games in the early years that earned these loyal fans. As a result, some of those fans now feel a false sense of entitlement. They feel they have earned the right to constructively critique and even personally attack, which is just silly. I've likened it before to being invited over for dinner by your neighbor and then criticizing the meal they've prepared.

Yeah, I very rarely post outside of "group" threads anymore, where I know a few folks and know it's not some kind of warzone. One can hope, I guess.

The wording of the new rules is strong, but I don't think it's unfair at all. The bans are also regarding BSN, not your EA account (assuming EA don't mess that up again).

Hi there!
I read the new site rules and I think they are good and fair. I am sorry to learn that people in the past attacked Bioware employers just for fun or for something stupid and silly reasons.
However, there is a thing I do not understand. In the update there is written that:

"An account is determined to be in “good standing” in the following ways:
For users who have not already logged into an EA game using this Origin account, the account must be older than 30 days;
For users who are already playing EA games and have logged in using this Origin account, the account must be registered with this site for at least 24 hours."

English is not my first language, so I cannot understand if I have to make a new account with Origin or if my EA account is fine. Could you explain me what this means, please?

Thanks for the attention and for your great work.

Anyone know what caused it anyway?

Trolls, flame wars. The obvious that comes and goes here.

were there attacks against individual staff members?

lololol one that happened like.. in 2006 I think. Some lady was called a cancer to BioWare because she wanted a skip button in combat like you can in convos. Not a bad idea for those who just want a RPG game instead of the combat/story thing.

The statements she made were in 2006, but the uproar was fairly recently. It was the worst side of gaming fandoms I've ever witnessed.

I want things to be happy. Really I do.

I want things to be like old BioWare, where they could work and we could enjoy the product, praise and critic BioWare, and they would talk with us. I don't suppose anyone remembers the release of Mass Effect 1 and the ME forums.

Now, I don't feel any of that. All I see in this network now is hatred, spite, towards employees, to customers, to everyone. No one deserves it, and I think we all have the best of intentions, like a brother would argue with his sister for the benefit of their success. But I just can't fathom why things ended up like this. I don't know if this is EA, or just how things evolve when money and success is involved. I want the old times back.

EDIT: It's not about the rule changes, it's just why it had to be done and what's been happening, and why we need it now, I follow the rules sure, but it shouldn't have come to this.

I blame the new members.  I've been around long enough I can do this now.

Spoiler

Bingo.  Though there's been plenty of times in the past where something of this could have been called for.

I wouldn't have a problem at all with the bans especially since I don't condone the insults and threats of others if it didn't lock people out of their games as well.  If Bioware could split itself from the EA forums on that method, it would be fine, but at the moment, it's a corrupt practice to perform for someone who's spent their money supporting these companies.  I would tread lightly on how many/and how long the bans are otherwise it could get more news attention.  It got a bit of news press awhile back, but it's been pretty low since BSN's done a good job at handling full-time bans.

If this helps facilitate more rewarding discussions then I'm all for it -- especially with Mr. Eplers comment earlier in the thread. Sadly this won't stop people who would be affected by these rules from going outside BSN with their bile and rage, but at least this place might have a chance to counteract all that.

Here's to hoping.

This also won't stop people from making new accounts for the sole purpose for this type of thing. I expect most people to take their anger, and go to facebook or twitter instead of letting it out here. Hopefully not though.

I'm hoping this means a stricter and more heavily moderated BSN. If it were up to me, I would swing the banhammer very liberally and on an hourly basis.

I'm sure you'd appreciate the flak from every news outlet out there for locking tons of people out of their games then. Image IPB  Can also do a lot of things for a company's reputation as well as losing potential customers.

Good. Then maybe i can talk about games here without some invasive nerd in a Hugh Heffner coat and a pipe trying to dissect and put down my personal taste in games.

Arrogance on these boards is a huge ****ing problem. What i've observed these past years, especially among core members is some kind of idea that they're part of some premium club of valued intellectuals that should be worshipped. It's discouraging since there's just a big of a chance of having a reasoned discussion with these guys as there would be with hardcore Jesusfreaks. Bigots are Bigots are Bigots. But a change would be nice. Some people here are just way too negative and judgmental.

Bans should just lock you out of posting on the boards... not your DLC or EA account. Whatchuonabout?

Actually, as long as they don't personally attack you, they should be fine.

This applies to this site as well, and it's my major issue with bannings.  Posting here is a priviledge.  Being able to play your game that you paid for should not be.

Don't blame the new members. That's a dickmove and a severe case of selective memory. The only game released that didn't face a major backlash on these boards was DA:O.

Do you not remember the Awakening backlash? The ME2 backlash? the DA2 ****storm and now ME3 abuse.
It's ****ing crazy and it's long-time members and the so-called "faithful" customers doing this bull****. There's no room for the postitive, collected person on these boards anymore. Something's gotta give and showing these guys the door beats me walking out IMO.

I'm joking. Image IPB  I've been around since before the social forums, so I'm just making an 'old man' joke.
