I think we should get mods that follow the Australian and/or European timezone, for obvious reasons. If we're going to keep trolls and/or spammers at a minimum, might as well cover all timezones so they don't take advantage of any mods' absence.

This.

I remember last year when Mass Effect 2 was close to release, the Collectors reveal to be Protheans was spammed all over the site and they were there for quite some time.

does really bother me as I try to always be civil. its just curious that it came out on the same day as the total mess with game hit the fan and folk were rightfully going nuts.

So, that time when another member told me to go f**k myself would be an example of when they would be banned, right? Because I got a 24 hour ban for purely posting one comment (non offensive) in a troll thread that everyone was spamming.

There's also a bit of a grey area when it comes to comments to your friends. There are people on here that I KNOW that I could joke around with in threads and who wouldn't take offence, yet I am rarely outwardly rude to complete strangers - even when they are rude to me. That said, I can take a few silly/irrational/troll comments directed at me in relatively good spirits. It's a shame others can't.

If we can't joke with our friends on here then this site soon loses any element of "fun"

Which makes me wonder how the mods and staff know if we're actually joking with a friend, rather than being rude to a stranger. I don't post in the forums much (due to my fear of being banned for the slightest things), so would it not be difficult for the mods and staff to tell if I'm good friends with the person or people? I mean, they can't possibly spend the time searching to see if the individual or people I am joking with are on my friend's lost or not.

If they get an Australian mod then we'll all have to call him Bruce just to keep things straight.

All kidding aside, an evening/late night mod is an excellent idea.

Posting a smily in your post should be adequate enough to know your joking.

I agree. It's very difficult. And that's where things may get a little problematic.

I guess it'll get to the point where people are afraid to post in the threads in case they get banned (like you) or, at least post any jokes etc in case they are taken the wrong way.

Is it still allright to call the humans dirty slave trading midget bas?

Though i'm not a fan of Biowares new direction and emphasis on dlc over a finished product, I thought some of the abuse (especially against Mr Woo) was quite disgusting. I heartily agree with this clarification of the rules as even in protest one should maintain their dignity, and no verbal protest will make an impression upon company policy anyway.

I try to avoid swearing as that seems to be the quickest route to getting a ban. Or making a concern about something specific in the game.

This forum annoys me alot, some people fear of posting their own opinions incase they get flamed and accused of being  'troll'.

Like i said, it's specific members that do this and continue to get away with it.

I think its Chris Prestly that is the big dog for the forums. Start filling up his PM box with the requests. If not I am sure he would point you in the right direction.

This is good to know. Up until now I've always thought that we would be bothering the moderators if we PMed them with a link to something that we've already reported using the button.

I wonder if that should be a sticky or some sort. "Report this post" heads to the EA community managers but for quicker results (and the occasional funny comment) pm a mod.

Though I respect the action taken, and I seriously believe the forum needs a good scare (if communities aren't well managed then things are bound to get out of control, especially with the internet) I'm afraid that mods and staff alike will take it to far, to the point where we'd spend half an hour trying to think of the 'right words.'

But I have faith in the moderators and the staff to be able to point out a 'heated discussion' from obviously bashing, flaming, trolling etc...

I have high hopes that the future of the BSN, with this force applied, will be a better place. Alot of people - inlcuding me - let the anonymity and the freedom of speech get to their heads.

And that's a fair concern to have. Though I think that, by and large, we tend to be pretty receptive to feedback about moderation (unless it's of the WHY ARE YOU TURNING THIS FORUM INTO NORTH KOREA genre). By and large, most users won't notice a difference. As I said, we've been enforcing the 'no personal insults' rule for a while now, and all this really does is codify it. We want the BSN to be a place where people can interact and discuss our games with each other and with developers, and ensure that everyone can feel free to participate without worrying about being insulted or attacked.

Oh and while you're at it - try and get the "spoiler problem" under control :police:

Most whine but there is the odd few that create a thread on a certain concern, that is legitimate but they get easily ignored.

I kid, I kid. Yes, smileys often help, and if people were more in the habit of alerting us to trouble--again, using private messages to Moderators instead of or in addition to hitting the REPORT THIS POST button--we would have a much better idea of what you guys are like and what your tolerances and preferences are when it comes to trouble or disagreeable people. :)

Like i said, it's specific members that do this and continue to get away with it.

Usually, they "continue to get away with it" because we don't see the trouble they're starting. Making sure we are directly alerted to the problem may help with this in the future. Dismissing arguments by calling people "Biodrones," "trolls," or "fanboys" isn't productive.

Also, more people should lead by example. Don't get involved in a lot of back-and-forths. At some point, respectfully agree to disagree and move to a new topic. Don't respond to spam and troll threads, even with "reported" or "inb4lock" type posts (those are pet peeves of mine). Your time is better spent notifying a Moderator. And I personally really enjoy seeing threads where community members help each other out: directing newbies to an existing thread on a topic, telling them what a dev has said on a given topic, sharing their knowledge and expertise, that sort of thing. That's what our community used to be in the past and what we'd like it to be in the future.

People don't need to put us on a pedestal or be timid about "bothering us with forum issues." Like John Epler, I have the forums open on a second monitor so I can quickly deal with issues when they come up, and I refresh and check for messages a couple times throughout the day. I am also often checking in on weekends or my days off. And since I don't sleep, I'm often on late at night. So you guys have a lot of support.

But once again, we would love it if you guys also supported each other and helped each other out, too. as my signature says, "Be excellent to each other."

Actually, i think I would say that sincerity is the ultimate protection against a banhammer. Because tone can be difficult to read sometimes in a text-only medium, the less sarcastic you are, the more likely it is that people will understand your tone. in real life, like in film, people can pick up on subtle cues and inflections, but in forums, like on stage, you have to exaggerate your movements and expressions a bit so as to be clear to everyone, even the guy in Moose Jaw.

i don't know if you've noticed, but when I'm being facetious in the forums, I tend to exaggerate it so fewer people misunderstand my tone.

I can tell you from personal experience as a moderator that it is incredibly annoying to see a group of people go "Oh, this thread is going to get locked anyway so IT'S A FREE FOR ALL," and they post whatever they want in a troll/spam thread. There's usually sprinkles of "Where's the moderators?" throughout. And the number of reports sent via PM on the thread are zero. Why's it annoying? Because everyone complains they don't want trolls or spam threads, unless they personally are contributing to it for fun. Anyway, I noticed they added not participating in troll threads to the site rules after I left as a moderator.

John Epler mentioned that the moderators never looked too kindly upon personal attacks either, and that was true, though they always needed the assistance of the community to help report such individuals. Considering recent history and upcoming events, though, this needs particular focus. I'm pleased to see the emphasis on zero tolerance.

As for joking around, the moderators *are* capable of having a sense of humor. But if you're joking around telling your friends they're ****es who can go **** themselves, well, you see that BSN has censored that and so you're breaking another rule. That's just how it goes. Humor has a broad spectrum, so I'm sure you can adapt.

Basically, I just want to be warned if a mod thinks that I'm being malicious to another, when in fact I'm making jests with pals. I don't want to be banned "without warning", because I have been an active member on this site for 2 years now. Because really, I don't post on forums unless I've seen my friends have. In which case, I'm either trying tocontribute to the topic, or trying to give my friend (*cough*Smecky*cough*) a good burn. It's out of affection :')

We're not dodoheads either, Timbaroo. We can often recognize playful jest. I've been Chris Priestly's "sidekick" and "jest target" since I started with this company 11 years ago, and John Epler and I often trade witty barbs (mine are, of course, much wittier).

Unless you act like a real jerkface all the time, you'll get a warning, at least.
