High time.

Keep up the good work, mods. I've been there, on a smaller scale, and can appreciate how ugly it gets sometimes. :/

I think we should get mods that follow the Australian and/or European timezone, for obvious reasons. If we're going to keep trolls and/or spammers at a minimum, might as well cover all timezones so they don't take advantage of any mods' absence.

This.

I remember last year when Mass Effect 2 was close to release, the Collectors reveal to be Protheans was spammed all over the site and they were there for quite some time.

Oh my gosh.  That would have been devastating to read before playing ME2.  I'm glad I left the BSN when I did.  That's why I don't quite get the Space editions since the risk highly outweighs the benefit.  But, alas, that's another thread.

I wonder what were the prime motives behind this update..

Spammers? Maybe the whole affair with Hepler?

I really think the new site rules could help, especially the no. 13, since it should prevent trolls to create one day accounts for spamming. Although it might be a bit harsh to someone who just bought a BioWare game, had some question and has to wait 24 hours to be able to post. And customer support usually is pretty dumb...however I never called the BioWare customer support, so, dunno if it is different.

On another topic, I 'm just wondering why the "Report this post" button hasn't been removed, or better, replaced by a "conctact moderator" button. I mean why is it there if not to use it?

Depends on your attitude towards these changes and how much you want to stay. Really, how long someone stays in our community is completely up to them.

I just hope that the mods will tread lightly in implementing these new changes. I can understand the need to put an end to the Hepler bashing and all those "Why did f***ing Mr. Woo close my topic." threads, but recognizing harassment between community members takes a delicate touch. What looks like a mean spirited flaming to an observer could actually be a lighthearted inside joke. I just hope that they won't ban anyone for harassing other community members without actually talking to the person who the allegedly harassed.

This. Some of the people on here poke fun at each other in a light hearted way and i'd hate to see a mod take it out of context and perma ban someone/me. :pinched:

GMagnum will be missed.:crying:

So we're still open to criticize any Bioware products as long as no one makes any personal attacks.

That sounds good to me.

Can we still make fun of BioWare's fictional characters?

I mean, GMag got banned for making fun of Miranda (and for benchpressing with his nips), so I guess there's precedent. But I hope it won't get to the point where jokes about fictional characters (or each other) are no longer allowed because mods are afraid of the resulting flame wars.

The wording of these new rules is quite frankly, a bit hilarious. It fuels the stereotype of BSN being overbearing and over moderated, even if not really true and that these particular new rules ought to be a good thing.

All in all though, as long as I don't have to tone down my Fallout 2 LP, I'm not too bothered. I try not to fly off the handle and make personal attacks on the BSN to begin with, so I don't think these rules will affect me or my posting style.

"focus on the post, not the poster" is something we all ought to abide by.

As a hypothetical, does saying I don't trust people who work in marketing count as a personal attack?

As long as you don't refer them as "lying little runts," it should be okay. :wizard:

Hopefully these new rules will improve things around here. I know several people that rarely post or just left BSN all together.

Couldn't agree more.

Most Mods are off at around midnight everywhere, and thats when them sly trolls come out.

Well, I don't think this sudden highlighting of the rules has anything to do with the fact that ME3 comes out next week, huh? Pure coincidence.

I think it best to avoid the ME forums next week, especially as people discover some of the endings. Oh boy....

GMagnum didn't get banned for making fun of Miranda, he got banned for making grossly sexual comments about her.

But I suppose that's neither here nor there.

I expect a lot of rule flexing in the coming days about this, on both sides of the "Good Game"/"Bad Game" groups as well as the optimists verses the pessimists. In addition, I see an influx of reports to the mods/support just to see how far the lines can be crossed.

I must admit that I have a slight problem with part 13 of the new rulebook. At one point, I was a newcomer over here, same as everybody else. Such a large waiting period (30 days of lurking when I want to talk about something current?) does little to intice the newcomers to stay a while. The second segment of this, I have no problem with (24 hours really is no time at all, in the grand scheme of things) as it's benefit far outweighs the disadvantages. Anything to help prevent trolls and spambots from flooding a forums.

Seems that lately Pathos is far more effective compared to Logos at ending an argument. Flame bait, name calling, stereotypes (biodrones, doomsayers and the like), and personal opinion stated as fact have gone to the forefront. Stating a person's viewpoint and explaining things with facts, opinions, statistics, and/or professional opinion seems to run into a wall when such easily thought arguments can be imagined quickly. "I am right because X is just a Y..." requires afar less mental power than "Because of the following items: X, Y, Z ... I am opposed/for item 1." I remember debates that lasted quite long because they were not so simple minded (Keep/Destroy the Collector Base had such promise, until it resorted to name calling. Both sides had defensible arguments to persuade the reader."

In short: I miss the good old days of proper intelligent communication without the use of emotional bias.

Debate where facts are stated are preferable to arguments founded on emotion. Often times last longer, both sides can share their thoughts. Emotional OPs often exploited by one side or another to flame OP or the other viewpoint in the argument. These OPs are also more likely to be targeted by trolls (in my observations at least) due to how they can really get under an emotional person's skin. For an example, posting negative statements of a character in that character's appreciation thread.

Old forums were, at least to me FTR, more inclined to be discussed in an orderly manner. It wasn't into the debacle of the Bioware Bizaar (a valiant attempt to do something good that angered many fans) that emotional responses became the new approach.

I dunno Stan, I'm thinking this sends entirely the wrong sort of message about what Bioware thinks is comming, and not just the declaring a banhammer free fire zone but limiting posts to members who have been Origin members for at least 30 days strikes me as battening down the hatches.

And as a mod (and over all forum el supremo) myself, I know when I fire up the geller feilds over at Dark Reign, it means I think a proverbial excrement storm is comming.

What prompted this sudden move?  Or is it something that Bioware thinks has yet to happen?

I'm hoping this means a stricter and more heavily moderated BSN. If it were up to me, I would swing the banhammer very liberally and on an hourly basis.

I'm sure you'd appreciate the flak from every news outlet out there for locking tons of people out of their games then. Image IPB  Can also do a lot of things for a company's reputation as well as losing potential customers.

Bans should just lock you out of posting on the boards... not your DLC or EA account. Whatchuonabout?

http://www.pcgamer.c...s-out-of-games/

This applies to this site as well, and it's my major issue with bannings.  Posting here is a priviledge.  Being able to play your game that you paid for should not be.

Any bans done by us are forum-only bans. They shouldn't have any effect on your ability to play games.

Ah.  In that case, I am perfectly alright with this then. :)

I suspect a thread intending to support one of their employees getting constantly bombarded with nasty messages might have been the last straw, but really it should be a no-brainer that verbally abusing any individual isn't acceptable behaviour. People have probably become so used to such attitudes being tolerated in other forums that they expect it to fly here--or anywhere.

And, yes, while that's certainly a part of it, it makes it look like they are bracing for negative backlash from the upcomming ME3 launch.  That might not be their intention, but that is what it's going to look like.  Particularly with TB screaming into a mic and calling for a boycott of ME3 atm.
