You liked Pokemon and YuGiOh... hmm... can't say I've ever liked those, but if you're ready for some "real" anime, give Death Note a try. Next step is Ghost In The Shell etc.

But as of more ordinary shonen, I'm thinking Hunter X Hunter would be good. And Dragon Ball (the original series, not Z), if you're into japanese humorics.

^ This stuff always makes me lol, "dat anime suxor, it so mainstream 4 kidz", then goes and watches another fringe mainstream anime "dis is what wheel anime is gaiz." Technically its all anime, and its stuff I avoid watching.

And why Dragon ball and not Dragon Ball Z? I mean minus Z being blatantly more violent and more drawn out, I don't see a huge difference, especially with the early DBZ.

Then "lol" away.

But really? Pokemon and YuGiOh are nothing like the other I've mentioned... and which part of "I've never liked those" strikes you as "it is so mainstream 4 kidz"`? The quotation marks around "real" can work as tongue-in-cheek too you know.

I explained my answer about DBZ a few posts back. It's simple - I feel one should start with the original, not only because I feel it to be superior, but also that otherwise much is left unnoticed.

edit: though re-reading it, I do have to say the paragraph can easily leave a wrong impression. It's partly bad English and too-quick-a-writing on my part, partly the paradigmatic "forum text reading" on yours - if there's any room for it, a post is always interpreted as with negative tone - that it's hateful, spiteful or arrogant. Well, that's just wrong practice, but one does have to account for it...

I also made the effort to rewrite my original post.:D

I must be one of the only people who likes both American animation and Japan animation.

Or should I just say I like animation in general?

Nope, you're not the only one.

But what strikes to me as "better" in Japanese animation, is the more introspective and "spiritual" or "demonic" nature of it, and also the emphasis on very original and cutting music. Anime tends to be tad more philosophical, and deeply psychological, I think. And this is all a lot better than western cliche'd and common-sensical drama, imo. :)

edited for a bit better grammar

No, Some Geth, you're not the only one. I think if people started viewing anime as a medium for storytelling rather than "yay cartoons!", anime may become less, well, ridiculed by North American audiences. There are some truly stellar storylines in anime. Here are some of the anime I really enjoyed.

Claymore
Coyote Ragtime Show
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Planetes
Azumanga Daioh
Love Hina (I'm almost sorry to admit this)
Genshiken
Tengen Toppen Gurren Lagann (I don't know why I like this one but it had me until the end)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Appleseed
Ranma 1/2
Burst Angel
Gunslinger Girl (but not Il Teatrino as much)
Full Metal Alchemist

I am partial to giant robots and science-fiction anime.

Oh and FMA was not so bad for doing it's own thing from the manga but the last 7 episodes ruin the show for me.

So I just go for the manga and FMA:Brotherhood now.

Oh and if you are into giant robots you should see GaoGaiGar.

I don't recommend anime, in part because it's evil and killed my father, but also because I find it vastly inferior to good ol' American animation.

Yes, truly our cartoons are a masterpiece to behold. :P

Most of the cartoon animations of the american persuasion aren't nearly as story-driven - at least from the majority I've seen. It's improving though; you've got your Lauren Fausts making MLP/Powerpuff girls, you've got Batman: The Animated Series(The 90s one). That was good storytelling.

Love Hina (I'm almost sorry to admit this)

That show was the answer, with the question being "How much innuendo can one group put in an anime?".

I love when people make it hard for me to prove them wrong. Essentially said its not real anime, which is false, just because it doesn't conform to what you like doesn't make it not anime. Anyway you try to spin your own words, doesn't change the fact it was flat-out wrong.

Let me know when you are adult enough to admit you are wrong with respect to your post.

Evangelion (if you're into mechs and political stuff)

Evangelion was political? o_O I suppose you could look at it that way with lawl spoilers SEELE or the like, but I'd say it's more psychological/philosophical, or otherwise bonkers in plot.

I saw You Are (Not) Alone and the military was locking down civilians in shelters.

Military = Political. And then let's not forget the religious themes.

Either way, I don't care for either. And then by the time you get to the paychological side of the anime, I haven't gotten emotionally invested in the characters. Though I love psychological themes, I can't watch something halfway through without watching the beginning.

Some of my favorites are:

1)Fullmetal Alchemist. Brotherhood is better then the original anime based on the manga simply because Brotherhood more closely follows the manga, but the original was still really great
2)Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Both the 1st GIG and 2nd GIG. Hopefully we'll get a 3rd Gig. I heard rumors that one might be in the works.
3) Rurouni Kenshin
4) Cowboy Bebop
5) Pokemon (I realize you said that in your OP, OP)
6) One Piece. From what I've seen of it when it was first starting, it was fun to watch.
7) DearS. One of the funniest anime/manga series I've ever seen/read. Sadly, there are only 13 episodes. It's a shame no more were made when the manga went a lot further.
8) Love Hina. Also a funny manga/anime
9) Afro Samurai
10) Trigun
11) Hellsing.
12) Descendants of Darkness

I'm sure I've got more. I recommend reading manga too, as a lot of good manga doesn't really make it to becoming anime. Sometimes they don't even get out more then a few issues before they're stopped.

Manga:

Descendants of Darkness -- deals with how the agents of the Afterlife go about bringing people to the afterlife, and often deals with investigating things that affect the balance of life. Was made into an anime that I unfortunately cannot find many episodes of online.

Alichino -- I can't quite recall what it was about -- been a long time since I read it -- but it was a great manga. If you could get past the fact that some of the guys really did look like chicks in this manga.

War Angels -- an American manga that explored a futuristic post-apocalyptic Earth where man-animal hybrids rule over normal men, and three people were charged with protecting a woman believed to bring about the second coming of Christ.

Shame it never made it past one volume, as I really liked it.

Judas -- Can't tell you what it's about -- only have two volumes and it's been a while -- but I can say I enjoyed it.

I would put One Piece in the manga list, the anime has a lot of filler, edits and the pacing is all over the place.

I will say the anime does have some great voice acting, music and at times really good animation... BUT! One Piece really is a manga first and a anime far second.

And not just cuz the manga came first.;)

I am wrong to have an opinion? It's hard to put a finger on what was amiss - aside choosing slightly misleading words to convey my post. And you're in the right demeaning me?

If I get my facts wrong, then it's easy to notice a mistake, and I'm glad to do so, but if the problem is that my post in a forum is mildly annoying to another forumite, I'm not so eager to say I'm sorry. Moreso, I know you understood me quite wrong ;) (but I did make it easy for you - this was indeed a mistake, but one that I need to apologize to myself to, not others).

My point is, I say again, that I didn't mean the word "real" in full seriousness, nor the whole post for that matter. My position is explained more elaborately (and painfully) in the re-written version in the edit. Mind you, these two versions are near identical in meaning, as far as my intention(s) were concerned.

I've watched one Episode of Cowboy bepop (Looking to get the full series one day). 'bout it for T.V series. I have Steamboy but haven't watched it yet. Pretty sure that's considered Anime.

I'd like to get into Ghost in the shell but don't know where to start. With the anime or manga and which thing of the anime.

I'm clearly not demeaning you, I know you understood me quite wrong, but I did make it easy for you to read, perhaps you just failed to comprehend.

Misleading =/= wrong, you didn't use misleading words, you used wrong words. There are other languages on the BSN forums, perhaps you should try those forums. Friendly suggestion:innocent:
