I'll probably get a brick thrown at my head for suggesting this, since its not a Japanese, but an American-made cartoon, but I would recommend checking out Avatar: The Last Airbender.

It has some definite Asian themes, in both character design, combat, philosophy and art. And I think the story has great humor and, at the same time, tackles deeper themes and struggles.

Also... Samurai Jack.

I love Samurai Jack and Avatar: The Lost Airbender. They were great shows.

Long ago in a distant land I -- Aku the shapeshifting master of darkness -- unleashed an unspeakable evil. But the foolish samurai warrior wielding the magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck I tore open a portal in time that flung him into the future where my evil is law.

Now the fool seeks to return to the past and undo the future that is Aku.....

That Dude in the Suede can give you any number of ideas on Anime. And unlike many other online reviewers, he is genuinely funny without the need for swearing or crude jokes. He just doesn't do them and still makes you laugh.

He's also from New Zealand so he has a cool accent.

I'm clearly not demeaning you, I know you understood me quite wrong, but I did make it easy for you to read, perhaps you just failed to comprehend.

Misleading =/= wrong, you didn't use misleading words, you used wrong words. There are other languages on the BSN forums, perhaps you should try those forums. Friendly suggestion:innocent:

Fair enough.:)

But I do feel the need to practice my English, and the BSN forums seem perfect for these purposes. :P

Princess Mononoke, Akira, Avatar is really well done as well. Anything by Hayao Miyazaki. There are so many great ones out there like Kino's Journey, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, etc.

Avatar is American, but who cares. It's inspired by Japanese Anime and that's all that matters.

Yeah I know, but it's a really moving anime IMO, I could care less where it's created.

Both shows are great and who cares if they are not anime or not made by Japanese.

Hell most anime is made in Korea.

Someone mentioned

Rim: Daughters of Mnemosyne

I just wanted to make a note that the anime is pretty grotesque. Just a word of caution before you think it's something else.

I forgot about:

Full Metal Panic + FMP: Fumoffu

It's more comedy than action, but it's not bad at all. It's just not my cup of tea.

Ronin Warriors

Old anime that was on cartoon network back in the day. I only caught the tail end, but what I saw was very good.

It's a shounen anime with a lot of action. There's this one demon dude in green armor with like 6 or 8 swords. At first, it looks like he has as many arms as swords. But in actuality he's just moving his arms so fast that it appears as such.

I had a chance to buy the series + the OVAs but I wasn't sure I wanted to pay the money. But I regret it now.

Yeah Ronin Warriors was not that bad, the dub was so-so but still the show was good for kid's TV.

I always find it funny when people get all moody about the word "anime" technically any animation can be classed as anime since its just the Japanese word for it.

There's one that will never see the light of day on the US soil, I think. Ebichu...it's the definition of strange japanese tastes. A talking hamster and the bizarre misadventures with the "eager" couple he lives with. Behold... Your Sexual Savior? Yeah; It's one of those shows.

You want strange? Here's Pugyuru.

I'm still not sure if the "Kids Channel" tag in the end is quite right. And oh, the ending song kicks ass.

If I may stray away from anime, there's always the paradigmatic strange flick called Funky Forest. Really strange, and could very possibly be one of the most disgusting/-turbing kind of youtube-uploaded movies you've ever seen. Not a thing to recommend really.

Ningyo No Mori (Mermaid Forest). It's a shorter series by the lady responsible for Ranma 1/2 (also good, funny show, martial arts and gratuitous nudity) and Inu Yasha (started off okay, slipped gradually into shounen series nonsense). There's an earlier OAV adaptation called "Mermaid Scar" (Ningyo no Kizu) that's also worth a look, although that storyline is one of the story arcs in the newer series. The basic idea is that in the distant past, the hero ate the flesh of a mermaid (not quite the kind you're thinking of) and became functionally immortal. He and his equally immortal lady friend are wandering the earth having adventures, and as they lack any resources or powers other than not dying easily, it gets rather bloody.

Another good one I recall is "A Wind Called Amnesia." Basically stand-alone, one day everyone in the world forgets everything they know. Also there's a killer robot.

Oh, and this one's fun:
