...serve in the Mass Effect 3? Does it have any significant plot tie in? Or, is it just another decoration in Commander Shepard's quarters again? Please don't leave too many spoilers.

It's in the war asset list so it must do something besides being a paperweight.

It's the reward for the Firewalker DLC Quest. It pulsates and looks really really cool in your cabin. It used to be bigger than you are. also It bears a striking resemblance to the Titular artifact from the movie "Sphere".

yeah i noticed there is no reflection of you just the surroundings like in the movie

The orb was a manner of storing information in a physical compressed manner that apparently was extremely compressed, encrypted, and sizable.
