That's right. You have to stack them and if you can accomplish this, you get an achievement.

It's the reward for the Firewalker DLC Quest. It pulsates and looks really really cool in your cabin. It used to be bigger than you are. also It bears a striking resemblance to the Titular artifact from the movie "Sphere".
And is a copy of the spheres that you can encounter in Mass Effect 1. In fact these spheres can be used in conjuction with the right item to transmit memories across generations.
In Mass Effect 1 you can interact with one of the sphers to gain the memories of a ****** sapiens who lived 90,000-50,000 years ago.
So these aren't weapons, rather they are memory libraries.
So instead of reading Sun Tzu's Art of War you'd simply plug yourself into one of these doodads where you would live through Sun Tzu's life with him.

The Orb has a role at the very end (after the game) Where it allows a the survivors of Normandy to live as inbreeds for generations to come put their Orbs in their own Flesh and Blood.
