i have varric set up to attack whoever hawke is attacking and i'm wondering if it's possible to get him to use rhyming triplet if that particular enemy at that particular time is of a high rank, or has high health, through tactics
(i don't want him to draw any aggro obviously)
i couldn't find a way when messing around with them, but then i couldn't get my head around some of the options at all, so i'm wondering if there's a lot i'm not getting about them.
any help with that one will do for starters

your best bet would be something like this:
enemy: elite or higher --> use current condition for next tactic
enemy: target of hawke --> rhyming triplet
the use current condition works to join two conditions, such that the tactic is only triggered when both conditions are met.
'elite or higher' is generally better than 'x health' since that works by proportions rather than total amount.
If you want to get varric to be more useful, you could try adding some crowd control (pinning shot), CCCs against elites, and maybe some threat management.
There are some other threads which explain how tactics work, but if you have any other questions I'm happy to help.

well i did some reading but there's so much information and so many possibilities to cover, I thought i'd fire out another specific question i have...
i have varric set to stealth when his health is below 25%, but i would like him to go passive when that happens, and stop attacking until stealth breaks, is this possible?
(ideally i'd like him to reposition while stealthed, but that seems unlikely)

I've tried the Stealth tactics for Isabela when health is below a certain percentage, and my experience is that she actually becomes passive for some time and is actually moving away from danger even with "Aggressive" as default behavior. I haven't tried it with Varric, so I'm not sure how he reacts during stealth.

why do you want varric to go passive?
sounds a bit of a waste of party dps.. using stealth will drop any aggro he picked up, so it's unlikely that an enemy will start attacking him straight away.
but anyway, you could probably set it with:
self: health < 25% --> stealth
self: health < 25% --> skip tactics
If it's high enough in the tactics order it would mean that at low health he would stealth (when able) and not do anything besides that.
It might be something else, but if i remember right, that should stop varric from doing anything - at least until his health increases to more than 25%.
Have you got some healing conditions set? i.e. a mage to cast heal, or some potion chugging?
if your party is setup well, you shouldn't really need more than that and it wouldn't be necessary to have party members hiding away in stealth.
also, instead of stealth you could use armistice and goad to send enemies away from weaker companions towards your stronger tankier party members.

i have hawke drawing all aggro as a two-hander, so she tends to trigger bethany's heal spell tactic and sometimes then it will be on cd for a rear attack on the party.
i mean i'm not going for maximum efficiency, more a nice party strategy from an aesthetic point of view.
it's my second nightmare playthough and with the dlc weapons i'm breezing through it, just group attacking one thing at a time.
first time around i did it pure vanilla, with a mage, and paused for everything, didn't use tactics at all, it took me about 300 hours to get through, and I made some ill choices skill-wise early on, so it was tough for a while, but that was my learning curve.
right now i just want to develop a nice system that'll cut my need to pause right down, but i'm not using anders, the party i've chosen is for rp purposes, and besides, i like the two stealthers stealthing when it suits.

hmm, tbh the best way for a 2H to have no-pause play is to have your team prioritising targets, crowd-controlling, dealing dps, and managing threat almost independently of hawke so you don't have to be everywhere at once.
- single target crowd control set to automatically hinder elites and set up CCCs (pinning shot, winter's grasp, petrify)
- CCCs against elites (stone fist/spirit bolt against disorients, archer's lance against brittles, chain lightning/crushing prison against staggers)
- threat management to protect the weaker companions (armistice when companions getting attacked by melee, goad when by ranged)
Basically having party synergy to a greater degree than 'everyone attack the same target' will probably make your party much more effective - but i suppose you're not going for that.
Haha well good luck with your stealthers, I hope 'skip tactics' works
