What am I missing or doing wrong?  I have completed the Dalish Elves area, Mage tower, Recliff castle, and a few other quests.  Is this tied to leveling or unlocking secrets?

You get spec points at level 7 and 14...however your PC needs to have learned the specs before he can spend points on them.

You get a specialization point at level 7 and 14. Specializations aren't just handed to you though - you need to unlock them either through talking to NPCs or learning about them through books. For example, Alastair can eventually teach you about Templar, and there's a book available from the camp vendor for one or two specializations.

What class are you? It depends on who you talk to and where you go. Specializations are learned mostly from manuals you can buy or from NPC if they like you enough. Some are also quest based.

Some you can learn from party members, some you can buy books for (if you want to keep the cash, save, buy book, load), and others come as part of quests.

Talk to your groups NPCs to learn specializations. Blood mage is learned from a spirit in the Fade.

If you have done the elf main quest then you missed arcane warrior from the ruins. I'm sure you can always go back and get it. Always be sure to check every room.

The Fade portion of the Redcliffe quest if you solve it in a particular way. And you need to be a mage yourself.

I really hate that you cannot unlock all specializations in one walkthrough.

Cool, thanks for the posts. I did get Arcane Warrior in the Werewolf area, but I am a warrior so it soes not appear available. I do have one spec. point but nothing to spend it on yet.

Warrior, ehhh?

Templar: Allistair - Keep bugging him every time you gain influence, he'll eventually teach you.

Berserker: Ohgren. Same as Big Al.

Reaver: Side with the cultists when urn-hunting.

Champion... Cure the Arl. May not be possible if you side with the cultists. (Can't recall)

Spoilers for the warrior specs below...

Champion: Redcliffe, through Eamon.
Templar: through Alistair.
Reaver: through the dragon cult.
Berserker: through Oghren or a book.

Actually, if you play a mage, you can unlock them all in 1 go.

Nope, even if your not a mage whatever mage you send in can learn the talent and you still get it. I sent morri in and got it that way.

No, you can't. Only your main character can make a deal with the demon. Please don't try to mislead people with stuff you know is false.

You can but you really need to know what to do before hand. I found the Spec. locking to be a bit redundant actually as if you see the books you can just save, buy, reload and if you don't want to go down a certain path, i.e. Blood Mage and Reaver, once again save, do relevant actions, reload. Due to this I'm so very glad I didn't have to unlock them for each character / play through.

Good news is that once you have one unlocked, it is unlocked for all play throughs.

I hate that game mechanic.

Just so you know. ;)

I have to agree.  With my human noble, I unlocked Arcane Warrior -- and not being really able to use it, it was largely meaningless; however, an Elf Mage who would unlock it -- that seems like a meaningful part of the elven story!
