The first launch is forever perched in a 100 something foot
tree, another was literally craped on by its receiver, and the ones that were
played allowed for unverifiable spoilers to poison every one’s mind. So in the
end do you think the ad campaign was worth it?

I'm sure it was for those that actually found copies, but overall I think it's pretty foolish.

It was an interesting concept.

And one that will probably never be tried again. By anyone.

It was kind of a neat idea. A little gimmicky, though. At least it was better than such marketing failures as "Name your baby Turok" and "Deface people's graves by putting Shadowman 2 advertising on their tombstones". Oh, Acclaim... the world misses you.

It was a novel idea and congratulations to the fans that got a copy but it wasn’t controlled enough. If you randomly launch your product into space there will be undesirable recipients and uncontrollable accidents. If only they were able to get the copies to big fans who would appreciate it.

I thought it was a horrible idea from the start. And now because of it nearly everyone on the forums knows major spoilers about the game. In a way I feel sorry for Bioware, the game is less than a week from launch and they're getting a lot of criticism on here from people who haven't played the game yet...

Someone went completely out of their way to get a copy just so they could poop on it? The hate was strong in that one.

I wish they had given out the copies a little later. Maybe today or tomorrow or something.

I really wonder what that first meeting was like, where what would be the final pitch was made.

*shakes head*

Having people sign an NDA doesn't mean anything.  People were willing to try and sell it on eBay, answer questions about the game here on Bioware's own forums, there's really no end.  It's quite sad...

Bioware, I had nothing to do with any of these leaks or spoilers, but nonetheless, I'm very sorry that all of this had to happen.
To myself (and others) you're still a great developer.

Yes, make sure you control who gets copies lest it create some bad press.

Did this actually happen? I've been googling my face off for half an hour now and found nada. I tracked it down to reddit but can't find the thread.

Actually, my biggest concern when I first heard about it, was that there would be fights between fans! I'm glad that didn't happen, but really, it would have been just as nice if they gave away a few free copies just before the game released. Like one or two days before. But whatever. What's done is done.

It was really stupid and reckless, everyone said this would happen. I don't know what the purpose of this stunt was or what EA was expecting. I imagine its the usual, trying to get a bunch of people to take notice of the game. There are better ways to do that, I can't believe a company as big as EA, which probably has tons of marketing analysts and who knows what ever thought this idiocy was a good idea.

yes but mostly because I'm sadistic and enjoy watching the BSN rage. it's amusement after 13 to 14hours of work.

from a marketing point of view though I'd say it was an utter disaster but I think Microsoft already did a pretty good job of killing ME3.

I expect anyone that is legitimately in a Spec Ops branch to take that as Challenge Accepted.
