Indeed as Taritu says, even if your pc is a rogue, play Alistair or Shale. Their job is more important. Your rogues need to be backstabbing or they are a waste of a party slot. So gather everyone up, taunt, and then strafe to the left or right until your rogues are doing the backstab animation.
Wow! Zevran totally sucks!

In the fights that are long I like Zevran's sustained dps (without goffing Lyrium potions). If you let your tank get aggro first, then Z can both be backstabbing and hopefully also be untouched.
And I like to make Z maximum offensive with a high STR (DEX just to get Momentum) and to use Axe + Dagger (not dual main hand weapons). Think I've read that the axe is quicker than a longsword, which is you good as you get to backstab more often/quicker (plus I've seen 1H axes giving +10% STR bonuses). And the same reasoning goes for the dagger - you don't backstab with your off-hand weapon, so it should be as quick as possible.

1. Alistair runs into enemy group.
2. Taunt
3. Select Zevran, right click just behind enemy line (which is now semi-encircling Alistair).
4. Watch Zevran murder everybody
5. Feel free to go to the bathroom if you've set Wynne to heal Alistair via tactics

Also worth using Ice Weapons/Flaming Weapons, because he hits very fast. I recently noticed my Mage could add ~20 damage a hit with Flaming Weapons. That was a "Leliana you're out, Zevran you're in" moment.
Poison is good for the same reason.

If your rogue isn't backstabbing he's wasting a party slot.
That said Zev is garbage and after the first playthrough where I took him I don't even feel the need to wake him up anymore.

I just don't stand him enough to keep him in any of my teams.

Zevran and Leliana would be a lot better if they switched inspirations.

What I really do not like about him is that you've got to spent too much time to control him, because he seems to like going face to face with his enemies -.-

I think you're not playing zevran right, mate... In my party he was a merciless killer... His backstabbing build is insane, and with some rogue talents(evasion, dual weapon proficiency) you can increase his survivability. Give him a pair of good weapons and control him yourself in battle(position him behind enemies and let him take out the bosses...) If your tank establishes some aggro on a boss-type enemy, then zevran can make real short work of him(in a matter of seconds, actually)...
Don't forget that poisons are quite useful too... I used to stealth in a room, kill an enemy in 4-5 seconds, damage another for the next 5 and stealth again
He's also an awsome mage killer. Stealth him behind the enemy mages, enter the room with the party and start with a stun against the mage. Shoot a paralyze from your mage, and unless he's a boss-type he'll die(white and yellow ones)... Even some boss mages die after a stun+paralyze combo if you get some good hits.
