Why do people speak of a patch for DA II as if such game was truly released?

I bought my game from steam. I have all the dlcs they installed without problem and I enjoy them.
Upto patch 1.03 installed well without any problem.
After release of patch 1.04, the "play" button remains blank.
I downloaded 1.04 from bioware, but it says DA2 is not on my system.
If I start DA2 interface (of course the play button is dumbed out and I can't play) then the 1.04 patch says DA2 core running close it.
I close it, then 1.04 installer says there's no DA2 on the system.
I don't want the patch, at least allow me to play my lawfully purchased game against money that's earned by working extremely hard.
After a day's work with eyes smarting and being totally exhausted, I reenergized only by playing DA2. But now I can't even play it.
Help would be appreciated.

You can't download the on-site patch here if you have the steam version. It won't work. You'll have to see if Steam is carying the update -- which, if EA and Steam are still fighting, then I assume that it does not.

The short and long? Steam and EA are in an argument because EA doesn't want to sell their dlc through third party companies any more. So Steam told them to gtfo.

You may very well be SoL :(

Some people actually like DA2 despite its flaws you know. Honestly some people are blowing the whole "worst game ever thing" way out of proportion.

Eh I guess the latest patch notes is not posted here in this section of the forum (it's all posted on the respective platform thread by Rob Bartel):

*whooo they finally fix Sunder*

Dragon Age II 1.04

GAMEPLAY

The effect of the Sunder ability now persists properly when saving and loading the game.

QUESTS (SPOILER WARNING)

When Isabela is present in "Magistrate's Orders", Bethany no longer receives incorrect friendship or rivalry points for resolving Kelder's fate.

In "Magistrate's Orders", Carver now receives +5 frienship if Fenris kills Kelder or +10 friendship if the player does so.

Isabela no longer has a plot marker in the post-game save if the player failed to complete "No Rest for the Wicked".

Aveline's head no longer vibrates in "Finders Keepers" when conversing with the warehouse guard.

FUNCTIONALITY

Players who choose not to log in will no longer be presented with recurring Lost Connection errors.

Certain ambient audio no longer cuts in and out when switching between characters.

DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT - "THE EXILED PRINCE"

Sebastian's plot marker, if present, is now removed when bringing him into other downloadable content.

DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT - "LEGACY"

Players are no longer able to re-use the Memento of Legacy to access the Legacy downloadable content multiple times in a single playthrough.

Players now receive an item reward when completing "Malcolm's Honor" with Carver in the party.

Fixed an issue that was causing close to 200 banter lines between Hawke and the followers not to fire.

Fixed a case where certain follower banter wouldn't appear when playing from a post-game save.

Isabela's romance banter now properly checks to see if the player is still eligible for romance with her.

Fenris's romance banter now properly checks to see if Fenris and the player slept together but have not yet made up in Act 3.

A ghostly Bethany no longer joins in conversations from beyond the grave.

Sebastian and Anders no longer talk about Bethany or Carver as if they're not present.

Carver no longer mentions his and Hawke's mother after her death.

DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT - "MARK OF THE ASSASSIN"

We have fixed a save-game corruption issue that was occurring for a small number of users in the autosave immediately following the dungeon capture scene.

PC/MAC-SPECIFIC FUNCTIONALITY

Players can now disable the snap feature for area-of-effect attacks by holding the 'shift' key.

Improved resource loading and memory handling in conversation to address sporadic crashes occurring for some users. The bulk of the resulting crashes were occurring in the conversation after the Isabela sex scene in Hawke's Estate and a conversation with Aveline in the Viscount's Keep, after she was promised the job as Captain.

Improved handling of login, messaging, and authentication during periods of server disruption.

XBOX 360-SPECIFIC FUNCTIONALITY

Improved resource loading and memory handling in conversation to address sporadic crashes occurring for some users. The bulk of the resulting crashes were occurring in the conversation after the Isabela sex scene in Hawke's Estate and a conversation with Aveline in the Viscount's Keep, after she was promised the job as Captain.

Triggered autosaves now number themselves correctly, ensuring that they're correctly loaded when players choose to "Reload last save".

Sebastian no longer gets stuck as a locked party member after the completion of his quests.

Save games will now load properly after switching between Xbox profiles.

PS3-SPECIFIC FUNCTIONALITY

Sebastian no longer gets stuck as a locked party member after the completion of his quests.

I just downloaded the patch on ps3 any Ideas on what it fixes?

Well if the Patch 1.05 released for DA:O transform the second installment into the first game I would definitely give it a try. Hence I thought that the next patch for DA:2 will have the number 1.04?

Just in case you're still confused: the PS3 version had a major bug on launch, and the first PS3 patch, 1.01, was specifically created to fix this.  Thus the latest patch is 1.04 on the PC/XBox and 1.05 on the PS3.

Hi,
I understand the war between steam and EA.
But:
1. My 1.03 patch was installed without any problem after downloading from bioware and not for steam, because by then dragonage 2 had been removed from steam
2. The later DLCs like Memento of Legacy and Assasin were both purchased from my account and downloaded from Bioware, AND they all installed perfectly in the steam game.
So, it's not really due to the war between steam and EA maybe.

Anyway, Even if i bought from steam, EA got its money.
I have been buying everything dragonage from the start and from Bioware only.
So why should I not be allowed to play my purchased game?
The patch behaves as I said - problem with patch.
It's hard on me, yes.

Thats weird.  I have the Steam version too and have had no problems. The patch automatically downloaded for me perfectly.

Worst thing is both the 'uninstall' and 'play' buttons are greyed out on the launcher. I can't even uninstall and reinstall. I would have, if it would have solved the problem.
Really stumped.

Not really. DA2 genuinely was the worst game I've ever played.

hence why I won't stfu about it a year down the line.

If it's still in Steam, are you able to go into game Properties -> Local Files -> Then click "Verify integrity of game cache"? Steam will check all of your local files against what it has on its servers, and re-download any corrupted files.

Despite the fact that DA2 was removed from Steam, it is still on their servers for downloading, patching and such for anybody who bought it in the past.

I'm sad that with all this fixing of bugged quest markers, the one involving the Barbarian Cache is still very much present.
