So... Sex Scenes... How far did Bioware go in this one?

I think the problem isn't as much that they're gratuitous ( they don't show more than your average M rated movie ) as it's that sex just isn't accepted in games yet. Most likely due to the interactive nature. Mass Effect got bashed for being a juvenile sex simulator back in the day too. Hell, a lot of people still mock BioWare titles by branding them dating games. That is the real immaturity at work if you ask me.Dave Exclamation Mark Yognaut wrote...
Re: the Witcher 2 issue, those sex scenes are pretty gratuitous - there's really no way around that. They do, however, resemble the actual sex people have in the real world more than sex in Bioware games tends to, so it's kind of a "pick your poison" sort of issue. (And they tend to have better interactions w/ characters in a relationship, but that's a different topic.)
But really, sex in games is almost always terrible. I'm surprised that people expected ME3 to be an exception.
Honestly, that sex scene would have annoyed me in a movie, too. Objectification, male gaze, etc.

Not sure what perceived sexism has to do with something being gratuitous.Dave Exclamation Mark Yognaut wrote...

Other way around. Gratuitous nudity (but only for female characters, the dude keeps his pseudo-medieval boxers on) is why I percieve the direction in those scenes as being examples of objectification/male gaze.
(But don't get me wrong, the actual characters in the game are great.)

He doesn't really keep his boxers on as there is a nude model. They just never show much below the waist. To be fair, it's not like they spend much time shooting close ups of the female sex either. It limits itself to the occasional butt shot. And honestly, you spend the entire game staring at Geralt's ass.Dave Exclamation Mark Yognaut wrote...

Again I can't help but think that gratuitous is being misused here. There is nothing gratuitous about nudity during a sex scene. To suggest so is silly. If anything your complaint should be that it ought to be more equal.

No, just that the nudity didn't seem to serve any particular purpose other than having nudity in the game.

Exactly! It's just trying to save face given the ****storm that erupted when such a scene happened in ME1. And they do have the descriptor on each box: "Partial Nudity."
As to their being only one purpose for being nude. I beg to differ. If this, weren't true, we wouldn't have such thing as nude beaches, nudist camps, exhibitionists or streaking (I found a YT vid with Femshep doing such) Nudity =/= some sexual implication.
Reminds me of that joke from from a "George Lopez" episode where Ernie mentioned staring out his window looking at George's mother! Ernie then asked: "Why was she sitting on the couch naked?" George's reply was "She likes to air-dry!"
It's all about trying to save-face!

Personally, I'm not eagerly anticipating pixelated nudity. I don't really care about that. Very tasteful scenes can be thought up when wearing a lot more than they used in DA2/ME2. But it should be believable. I'll settle for realistic character animation and grandma knickers over mannequin doll animation + boobs.
The one thing that made me laugh out loud was Morrigan in DA wearing more during "sex" than during the entire game

You can blame the NES for that. After the video game crash of 1983, very few companies wanted anything to do with video games. Nintendo knew this when bringing their console to North America, so they marketed it as a "children's toy." It worked exceptionlly well, but because of that, there's a lot of people who still think video games are the sole domain of children, teenagers and immature adults.Randy1083 wrote...
I think the whole issue with Americans
freaking out about sex and nudity in M-rated games is because much of
America still believes that video games are just for kids, when that's
really not the case anymore. Video games nowadays are dominated more by
the twenty- and thirtysomethings than they are by children, and yet
people still want to treat video games like they're kids' fare.
To be fair, the LSL series didn't have much sex in them (and when it did occur, often it was off-camera or censored in some other way). The games were all about Larry trying to get laid. Usually something ridiculous happened that kept him from reaching his goal.Cyberarmy wrote...

Show a child getting into a shuttle, only for it to be destroyed seconds later? Perfectly acceptable.
Shooting a fuel tank which then explodes causing a Krogan to be set on fire and burn to death, screaming? Perfectly acceptable.
Show an autistic man being strung up to some machine by his own brother, while he's screaming for help (in tears)? Perfectly fine.
Show Kelly being liquified before your own eyes? Perfectly acceptable.
Showing two adults having consensual sex? Sorry guys, that would be disgusting, so we'll have them make out (briefly) in their underwear.

In other words, they're letting news stations and other outlets dictate the direction and content put into their games. What's allowed and what isn't according to the mainstream media.
Some will see this as religious intimidation, and to a point, it is. A lot of the ideas of supression of anything sexual comes from religious text and dogma that people just can't seem to let go of, and it continues to cause division among many people. It has it's place in this arguement.
But it's really just intimidation by the mainstream media, who just happen to be very religious or at least pretend to be. It's limiting creative freedom. The ESRB exists for a reason. It's right on the box and tells parents and everyone else what they can expect from M-rated games.
As it stands now, the ESRB might as well not even exist. We should just have Fox News sample every game and give their stamp of approval before it goes to retail. It's a double standard system, and it's disgusting.
Movies that are rated 'R' can have nudity and very explicit sex scenes, even in theaters. But if a game is rated 'M' (the equivalent of an R-rating) it's still held back by people outside of the ESRB who gave it that rating, and if it contains any sexual content, it's considered a 'sex scandal' and is turned into a circus by the mainstream media.
Game designers should have the freedom to pursue their vision as long as there is rating system in place. Likewise, gamers should have the freedom to enjoy those experiences even if the mainstream media and other outlets don't like the content that's on the disc.
This double standard needs to end, and people need to grow up and let the ESRB do their jobs. If you have kids, be a responsible parent and don't buy them M-rated games. It's really simple, folks.

As for the scenes, I only care about the characters, not so interested in seeing skin. I just want to know how will the Romance scenes will be for the M2 LIs, like Miranda or Thane.

i agree with you, i think the more mature and valid arguement that in most sex scenes portrayed in games are usually awkward and terrible and the ones that do show some skin, for some reason, seem to be more mature and done right. So i think that is what the concern is. Sex scenes with skin in the past seemed to have on average dopne it right. Thats why people are concerned

Actually, that is quite a valid point. No different than having Cerberus turn on us in ME3 for the sake of having a second-hand enemy to the Reapers if they weren't presented as the bad guys anyway and well, my goodness ... what did we think TIM would do since he's the "King Pin?"
I've heard that same thing regarding film and tv. I mean, such scenes do feel out of place - unless there's a reason for them, but often times there is! There's a reason Cerberus is after our behind! We didn't give them want they wanted! There's a reason sex scene are in the game! I mean, Shepard - hasn't had any in two years! ("Damn! I hope I'm not impotent!") I'm joking, but even if I weren't.
I'm not saying that they perhaps didn't just throw it in there, but there was a reason behind if they did. However, I do agree that the perception regarding sex needs to change regardless of how it is presented.
Maybe media outlets need to get a hold of some of the YT videos because at the end of the day, it's still about perception.
There's that joke regarding female tennis athletes. "Watch Maria and Serena with your eyes closed. Ignoring the rackets hitting the ball, do you think they are in fact playing tennis?" No. Odds are you're thinking something else because of the "grunts and groans!"
Yes, BW is playing safe, but why do they need to let everything go as the audiences' imagination can maginify it without it literally being magnified! We groan about creations being unimaginative or uninspiring; however, we don't use our own when we should! Ironic, no?
