Their shields/barriers deflected debris in the air making helmets pointless. Same to the vacuum.

Breathing apparatus is all you need.

People think its silly to not wear a helmet for a lot more practical reasons but in-game explanation makes enough sense for me not to argue it. I'm more in it for the aesthetics than realism anyway.

You have an option to toggle helmets under options. Squadmates will wear helmets whenever in combat zones. Only Liara doesn't get an actual helmet; she gets a mask. :/

Apparently Bioware wants you to look at all the hard work they put into animating lips.

Where is this option?

It's under "Gameplay" I think.

I...don't see it.

It's a ME3 option.  In "Gameplay" right under the option on whether Shepard takes her helmet off in conversation, there is the same option for the squad.  If you choose "Off in Conversations," the description says that the helmet will be removed in most conversations.

I'm similar but I kinda like the aesthetics of having everyone in helmets or more extensive protective gear

I loved Zaeed's mask and Thane's vacuum balaclava though

Yes. It's silly that companions didn't wear helmets in ME2 and I don't think they'll be wearing them in ME3. I'd like the option to toggle helmets on them like we could in ME1.

Nothing says badass like three people wearing helmets.

freezing would actually happen a lot slower than you'd think, since in vacuum there's no medium to conduct the heat away from your body so any heat loss would be radiative rather than conductive. Suffocation would be a much more pressing issue

Actually freezing is not a direct problem a all, unlike overheating, our body constantly produces heat to keep us at 36.6C, and with no medium to conduct the heat, we would indeed die, but not from lack of pressuere but simply of heat shock. Vacuum is HOT.

The meaning of a vacuum is no air and no air means no pressure. Without pressure there is nothing keeping the liquad in our bodies from turning to gas. We also need air pressure to keep our skin from bursting open, we see this ingame with the Volus who need full body suits when dealing with other races since they live in much higher pressure.

Many times in the life of people will they encounter a situation with no oxygen, swimming can be one of them, you don't explode because of it.

There's a lot more to it.

When you go swiming you replace air pressure for water pressure. It has nothing to do with oxygen but the pressure being placed on the body is what keeps the water in us from boilling.

I'll say it again.

The lack of oxygen does not mean the lack of pressure.

He didn't say lack of Oxygen he said lack of air.  In this instance they are not meant as synonyms.  Anyone with a passing knowledge of how open space works would've been able to use context here to grasp the meaning.  But since you don't even know that underwater you have pressure(and considerable pressure at that), that inference was impossible for you.  Let this one go: Better to keep your mouth shut and appear the fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.

Do not assume things, I am well aware of pressure underwater, hence why I mentioned it, but my point remains if you bothered to actually think about it.

In the games, they mentioned oxygen oxygen oxygen, not air.

I leave the helmets off 9 out of 10 helmets in ME look far too lame for me to even begin to like.

Oh!  I thought you meant it was ME2.  I was excited that I missed this option.  xD
