For me ratings are not strongly tied to how much I could enjoy a game. They rate things like graphics, controls, and sometimes stories but there are a lot of technically brilliant games that I find boring and a lot of admittedly bad games that I have all sorts of fun playing.
Of course very few ratings are objective. On a scale of 1 to 10. 5 is not bad just average relative to current standards.

Since when are 9s and 9.5s bad? But I don't really see the point in caring so much about the reviews. I'm going to get the game and decide for myself how much I like it.

How depressing it must be to need your opinion of something to be validated by someone else. Why do you care what score games get from reviewers? The only opinion that matters is your own. Also, game reviews are basically hype meters. They mean nothing. At all.
