Seriously guys... these scores are so arbitrary that its almost impossible to base your own opinion of a game on a reviewers score. Thats not saying that the reviews are bad in any way, on the contrary often reviews are very good and gives some interesting input to a new game. But that is all it is, or should be, input. The problem is that people want to interpret ratings as fixed grades on how good a game is. Sorry but thats impossible. Humans are always tainted by their own bias, opinions and mood. Also we weight issues and flaws differently and how we finally combine the sum of our experience will differ. Thats why its so important to READ the review, not only watch the score. Objectivity is an unreachable ideal, it simply does not exist in reality and all reviews are tainted by the reviewer and thus the reviewers opinion is never more important than your own.

There are several games that reached high scores that, if i had taken into account the exact same things as the reviewer, but weighted them differently would have resulted in a reduced score. Also reviewers tend to undervalue technical aspects on PC. I mean, Starcraft 2 had no cross realm play? No chat? No [insert random whine from endless whine threads]? Bruce Willis story? And yet the game got excellent scores, thats because the reviewers don't care as much as I do about these stuff. If I had done that review i would butcher the game flat. That doesn't mean that their reviews were bad in any way, that just means that their opinions and "weighting" differs from mine. Who is right, who is wrong? Who cares.

Well enough blabbering. Play the game, get your own opinion, compare it with the reviews and debate the issue. Or, maybe a casual approach is better? Just enjoy the game for what it is...

Well thats only true as long as i can import my ME1 Shep with the same looks :D. If not the game is a 1/10. :D

I hope at least IGN gives a deserving 10/10 in a while. It seems reviews are kicking in and some Polish reviewers are giving 9's and 9.5's to this game.

THAT sucks. I'm sure, even without playing it, that it deserves a perfect score.

Not that I care, I already have my CE preordered. But I want more people to know how great this game is so we can get more sagas with this quality from BioWare.

Well done sir, your sarcasm went undected by all the nerd rage going on, well done indeed. :)

Honestly guys, the review is in the text, not the score. Scores are completely subjective and vary based on what people think "average" and "good" and "great" translate to in a number scale.

What matters to me is what's written or said about the game experience itself. For example, in the IGN review-in-progress third update posted last night, the reviewer wrote some very powerful things and even made some bold declarations about ME3 and the ME series as a whole. That to me is a good indicator as even "good" reviews don't often contain that type of glowing or beaming attitude and the "I couldn't stop playing" and "I can't wait for you to get your hands on it" quotes. That got me even more excited for ME3, personally.

I know people will shout conspiracy theories about IGN and how it's bought and paid for and all that but honestly, is there something wrong with a guy who admitted he's a fan of the ME series honestly reviewing ME3 and loving it? Why does that have to be anything but legitimate?

This ^ ... Knew it was sarcasm from the jump but it morphed into something else entirely and I felt the need to comment on the rage.

IGN's philosophy is if they get the game for free, and its good it will get 9 / 10 but if it sucks then 7 or 8 / 10

There are people who'll love the game no matter what happens and there are people who'll hate the game no matter what happens.

Both are useless **** who should stay away from the video games industry.

The game will be a success in the commercial setting and a joy to play. The things that made it special in ME1 and ME2 will be diluted for the sake of the things that were reinforced. That's pretty much what happened with ME3.

How can you disagree with a review of a game you've not played? We don't know if ME3 will be any good for example DA1 was awesome yet the 2nd was disappointing in my opinion.

What? I mean I'm a fan of the series too, but I prefer critics be as honest about what they liked and didn't like about a game rather than just tell me what I want to hear hope to be true.

I actually expected reviews from websites, ESPECIALLY IGN, to give this game a 10/10, considering how much they overrate the big releases. The fact that it's getting lower reviews than ME 1 and 2 is... a little concerning. Of course, 9s are still great too.

Mass effect 3, nor any game, ever deserves a 10/10. EVER, That implies it is perfect, and that there is nothing to improve.

A 10/10 means the game is held at the highest tier of their scaling system, not that it's necessarily perfect. Just that it's among the best there is. Perfection is an impossibility and should therefor not even be considered in the equation for the scale.

The problem with your statement is the following:

You assume that score 10 should be a perfect game, without flaws, without any room for improvement.
Thus you conclude that no game can achieve this score since its impossible to do a perfect game. Therefore you state that reviews that give out a 10 are lying since they are implying that the game is perfect, which is impossible.

But the thing is that the reviewers probably aren't using your scale for 10:s. When they give a 10 they don't mean that the game is perfect and flawless, ther probably mean something like; You must get this game, cause its really really good.

But if they are reviewing by ur standards... sure, then no game should get a 10... but they aren't are they...

Look how IGN define a 10:

10.0 - Masterpiece

The pinnacle of gaming, a masterpiece may not be flawless, but it is so
exceptional that it is hard to imagine a game being better. At the time
of its release, this game is the not just the best the system can offer,
but better than we could have expected.

There is nothing about that the game has to be flawless or perfect.... they even say that the game doesn't have to be flawless. So please.

if you're getting the game anyway, does it really matter what the score is? Even with a crappy score, this game will sell.

Video game reviews are a joke. Look into how people get fired for giving honest reviews about games whose publishers advertise with the site/magazine. All reviewers are either bribed or blackmailed into giving games high scores. Never mind the fact that you have to basically try to get below a 7. The industry is a joke with less credibility then fox news. You are better off waiting for user reviews

Again, Say's who? You do, I do, the reviewers do, the teachers do - the statistics do. The only reason why the rating system seems so lop sided, is because most game reviewers primarily only review good, or highly hyped games.

Yes...I'm I'm sure blided fanboys that create multiple acounts to inflate the score and paid reviwevers dotn' affect it at all.

Numerical scores as they are should go the way of the dodo. Burn them, shot them and drive them over with a Buick.
The only decent scoring system I've seen is the one Angry Joe uses. But even that only goes so far.I'd ditch numerical and stick with a simple descriptor.

Crap > Poor > Below average > Average > Above average > Great > Amazing

Then how do you know he's trolling?

@OP, I don't really believe any game deserves a 10/10 unless it 1) Achieves to perfection everything it sets out to do, 2) has virtually no technical problems (regardless of platform), 3) is the pinacle of gaming at that moment in time, and 4) is an amazing game.

By that criteria, virtually no video game that has ever received a 10/10 deserved it. People who give games 10/10 are the real hipsters (if you absolutely have to use that description).

i would like it if reviewers would really use 1 to 10, but it seems the only number are 8 to 10.

That means a 5 is a solid but average game.
everything over 7.5 should really really be unheared of.
let alone a 9.

I'd like to address this.

Players are just as liable to double or slanted standards as the reviewers are.

It's the same as education and how the grading scale works.

By your scale 50% should be passable, but we all know from our education that 50% is failure. Hell 75% might be called "Average" but in truth, it's sub-standard.

There are plenty, and I mean an incredible amount of games that still fall flat and hit that grading scale failure. But reviewers are not going to waste their time on those. They're going to review the games that get your attention, thuse their raitings (and money). And many of these games are far above the 'average' shovelware that comes out of retail stores.

You just don't see them because you, like the game reviewers, will ignore them.

well you are talking about a test in school now, that is different.

Indeed. Lowest will likely be 8 or 8.5.
