Great progress for a game series first launched under the idea of engaging, intuitive conversations and deep, engaging characters...
I mean the biggest thing, the absolutely biggest thing when ME 1 came out was the dialogue wheel.
But yeah great progress how we now have absolutely no ability to influence conversations or avtively interact with characters.

Actual progress would be that there would have been more frequent updates in their conversation choices.
Not necessarily anything super serious or drama, just more personal about family, work, freetime whatever, to actually get the feeling that the character actually exist within the game world as more than a sidekick...

But then again I've been waiting for that since Baldurs Gate so...

That would require more money for more script lines and it isn't something BW wanted to do.  ME1 was often as I said an illusion of choice, many choices had your character say the same thing and often enough time was wasted going into dialogue wheels to find nothing new to talk about.

For more script lines? I thought one of the PR stunts for this game was that they already HAD like twice the amount of script lines?
This is just reinforcing my fears of 80% auto dialogue like in the demo.. I honestly thought that was just cut for space and such but now I am worrying...

Of course it was an illusion of choice. There hasn't yet been and rpg made where dialogue and choices had more that superficial effects on characters.. at least until the epilogue where they can do whatever they want.

But still, and this is just my opinion mind you, I play games like this more for the rpg aspect than the action aspect, which in my mind translates into character interaction and storylines.
And while yes I agree the conversation option were quite lacking and more than a little superficial most of the time I still got the feeling that there was more to my squadmates than just bullet sponges...

To me cutting away even the illusion of choice and interaction just minimizes the characters into.. nothing..

Another thing is, especially with Ashley or Kaidan, even if you didn't romance them they're still an old friend.
I mean this is someone who's been there with you since the beginning, someone with a similar background to yours and similar goals.
Through two games it was built up that you care about this person as a friend and that you by all indications had a pretty deep relationship going..

And now we seriously have nothing more to say to them? Our Shepards have nothing more than basically a hello when walking by?
I find that dissapointing.. I wanted actual buddies.. not cardboard cut outs with pre recorded messages..

Again though this is just my opinion/expectations

More script lines doesn't equate to your favorite characters getting a share of those lines. I think they have done a well job of balancing it out for what its worth.

You can never satisfy everyone, some don't want much dialogue and some want too much.

I think this was a better way of handling it than wasting my time trying to make me think they had more lines than they actually did.

And I also hold the opinion that the increased amount of banter and dialogue outside of the one on one dialogue wheels is more immersive than the previous titles.

Short, related, regular commentary is greater than the same dialogue with choices over and over.

I think this is a much better development.

Of course not, but you have to agree that the VS is a pretty important character in the ME series?

And the whole some don't want much dialogue... well that's what the new "action mode!" is for.
Seriously now, to limit interaction with what is according to BW (if you believe the spoilers regarding the endgame flashbacks) one of the three most important persons in Sheps life..That's just cruel..

I mean.. saving the galaxy and getting dismissed.. dying and resurrecting and getting dismissed, going on a suicide mission because no one trusts you, and having to work with an organization that is officially clssified as terrorrists, and then killing 300 000 sentients to stop the reapers who then appear anyway....
Seriously now.. Shep needs a hug

But it isn't really development. It's a step back.
Development would have been the same dialogue system but with more evenly updated conversation choices

All the modes have the same amount of dialogue, action mode is no different.  Its just different in how its presented.

And you can't show preferential treatment in how the VS gets how many lines over other characters.  Its the depth of their conversations that matter, not the quantity.

Well yes, because squad mates are reduced to automatic respones á la Zaeed...
But actual conversations (which is what I'm wanting) is cut down in "Action Mode!"

There can't be any depth of conversations with Zaeed kind of convos..
There isn't any interactivity and bacuse of no zzom in to convo mode there's no necessary investment in interest

Then don't talk to your companions? Besides that I have seen people involving the budget excuse for dialogue cut. Given that this game has a much larger budget that mass effect 1 and 2, I fail to see how this is relevant. It's more like they focused on something else, but then again, how can dialogue focus any ressources but the actors and the script writters (and the sound recording team?)?

Yes there are more lines to account for the massive amount of characters and dialogue to be had in the lengthy title.

No that doesn't mean squadmates necessarily have more dialogue in the form of dialogue wheel conversations.

if it's between a short conversation in which all the dialogue choice lead to essentially the same responses VS an automatic banter exchange with the same content, I'd prefer the latter since it's a more honest presentation

So you are in favor of deeper and more engaging conversations with characters we have just met and will never meet again rather than our squad mates who we have fought and bled with for years?

I just cannot wrap my head around that point of view, I'm sorry...

I'm in favor for the ability to have more conversations with more characters.

I know plenty about Ash already, new things to be talked about can be summed up in the amount of dialogue they have now.  Adding any more would be superficial and would really not equate to any actual progress as far as learning something useful.

Besides, squad banter and this kind of dialogue can flesh the character out more than one or two more dialogue wheel conversations ever could.

And to be honest, you won't meet any of your squadmates or anybody again after this game, I don't see why you are getting so worked up about it.

You do get to talk to them, in multiple different ways.  Its just you aren't satisfied that they didn't make it happen your way..

And to be specific its a story about Shepard.

Oh look for sure - had they introduced a ton of new dialogue with choices that branched out - and new topics all the time it would be amazing.

But ME2 had such little squad dialgoue - Zaeed and Kasumi had the most commentary - but it did repeat after a while.

This is a step up from "I've got a lot of work to do." or "I'm in the middle of calibrations." - I would literally get to "I'-" and I would be smashing the spacebar as my eyes rolled into the back of my head.

So yeah - I would love if they added heaps of dialgoue and choices - but ME2 showed they didn't want to go that path - so this is a step up - but not a step as far as it could go.

Well yeah exactly! I am dissapointed... But I'm kinda used to this since actual interaction and deep character conversations have been going downhill since all games started having voice acting for all characters and lines..

Shepard and his crew of misfit super soldiers....

And Shepard is the player's avatar. Your point?

I've seen her dialogues, specifically romance dialogues. They are definitely worth it.

I hear the romance is fine, but that she has a distinct lack of things to say if you're not romancing her. Sort of the old Tali "Oh, you don't love me? Then I really need to clean up this engine-FOREVER" sort of thing.

Which BW claimed they fixed. <_< Bull*****. I've had it with the lies. March 6th needs to hurry.

Perhaps they limit the dialog to sort of move you away form caring because in the end, you won't ever see her again. Preparing you for the end.

Saw a thread on gamefaqs claiming that if you didn't romance her she only had one conversation and the rest was Zaeed style. Please God, someone tell me this is BS.

The original post by Xiosite claims that there was only one  "regular-style"  conversation on the ship.
However he also had two conversations with her at a hospital.
And the VS is part of an important story mission.
