Simple enough question - before the Reaper IFF mission, after that but before the suicide mission or after the suicide mission? I'm thinking of before the suicide mission because I need to pick up some more heavy weapon ammo having left Grunt's loyalty late and blown a lot killing the thresher maw. I'll do that much earlier next time, but for now what are the pros and cons re kit and upgrades, and also having romanced Liara in ME and having a new LI option in this playthrough, of doing LotSB now or after acquiring Legion?

I personally find it best to do it a little bit before the Reaper IFF mission, and after you finished Liara's side missions on Illium.

There are a lot of creds on LotSB (I think about 100k) and a couple of decent upgrades, so you'll probably want to take advantage of that. You'll also get the ability to respec you squad mates whenever you want, as well as LIara's Stasis power (which I really like).

LI wise, Liara will reference any ME2 LI you've been running with. I think you'll have to option to end it with your ME2 LI and rekindle your romance with Liara. Note that even if you tell Liara you will end the relationship with ME2 LI you can still continue with you ME2 LI. Not sure effect this will have on ME3.

Also note that after doing the Reaper IFF, you will have "time constraints", so I wouldn't leave too many missions to do in the window between Reaper IFF & Suicide mission.

Thanks. I think I will do it before the IFF mission so as to sweep up the money and upgrades. Then lie to Liara/break her heart and then carry on with the new LI.  Bad Shepard, how on Earth did I get your paragon score get that high?

I'm not too worried about the effect on ME3 because I won't be taking this Shep on and will do another playthrough to change a few things. Not barbecuing everyone in the refinery just to keep Zaeed happy for one thing, and keeping things going with Liara for another. So I'm really only doing an LI this time for the Paramour achievement and to see the dialogue with Liara if she's dropped. Carrying on with whoever from ME seems more realistic anyway because it's only been a few weeks apart from Shep's point of view, and I reckon a couple of years from the LI's would be way less to Liara who can expect to live another 900 years than to the two human LIs.

Just seen on another thread an explanation of the time constraints you mentioned. I think then my ME2->ME3 game will go like this: recruiting first batch - Horizon - second batch - Collectors - loyalties and some side missions with decent upgrades in - Shadow Broker - IFF and Legion - Legion's loyalty - Suicide Mission - remaining side missions plus visit every system with something to do or shoot - and finally (maybe) Arrival. Sound reasonable?

Sounds reasonable. In fact that's what I've done in my cannon playthrough myself.

Also, from the wiki, confirming what I said earlier about LI's:

"Players who romanced Liara in Mass Effect can continue the relationship in the Lair of the Shadow BrokerDLC pack for Mass Effect 2. During the mission,
if Shepard has cheated on Liara, she will reveal that she is aware of
the other relationship. At the conclusion of the mission Shepard can
either end the relationship with Liara, and Liara and Shepard remain
friends, or the relationship can be reaffirmed. Even if the latter route
is taken, Mass Effect 2 love interests can still be called up to
Shepard's cabin afterward and relationships with them appear unaffected.
If Shepard did not romance other characters, Shepard will instead look
at the picture of Liara sitting on the Commander's desk. This will not
unlock the Paramour achievement."

I couldnt decide which love interest I wanted in ME3 Liara or Miranda. So you can also save inviting Liara to the normandy till after your shep has done the deed with Miranda depending on which character you want to have been the most recent shag

I have a femshep and Miranda's having none of that, thankyou very much. :D

Besides, can't stand Miranda. If it wasn't for the fact that she's the only Aussie on board I might be allowing for one casualty on the suicide mission. Bwahahahahahaha!
