Because there's not enough strong leading women in the gaming industry. For every Samus Aran and Lara Croft we get a load of ancillary females that while still being well rounded are still relegated to being second banana to a male lead.

look at it this way... you're playing a third person shooter... therefore you're looking at the backside of a character, also known as their mass. digital or not most guys would rather stare at a girls mass while they're clocking 40 hours of gameplay in two days, because lets face it: if you have this magical invention called a wee wee and you like looking at the mass of another being that has a wee wee it's just plain old gay.

My main Shepard is a female because I find it easier to role play as Commander Shepard that way.

Playing as BroShep I find myself automatically doing what I'd do in that situation. Playing as the female Sheaprd makes me think of what Shepard would do in that situation.
