That's actually kinda contradicts the Art of The Mass Effect Universe book. It was said there that the idea of turning TIM into a huskified monster was scrapped. I guess they still decided to make him light stage indoctrinated with visual signs.

Monster no... no final combat. But as you can see... indoctrinated. Bet it also has to do with the Merge ending.

Well, their original storyline had TIM turning into a hulking Reaper husk at the end, but they scrapped that.
I'd guess that the Reapers' close proximity is making TIM's Reaper implants react.
