90% of the people hated that aeris died in final fantasy 7, but it has become the icon of final fantasy games. If these endings are what we think they are, 90% of the people will hate the ending but it will be remembered as one of the best western rpgs.

Difference is, after Aeris died it wasn't the end. FF7 actually had a fairly joyous yay we saved the world ending, where you got revenge on her killer and all that. Not really comparable. A more accurate comparison would be to Virmire in ME1, since it happened mid-game, then you went on to beat the big bad and save the day.

Let me ask this: Did the trilogy's overarching tone EVER gave you the impression that an even remotely joyous ending was possible?
No
And why wouldn't I buy it?

I'm keeping my CE preorder. Among all other reasons I do believe that authors should write and end their stories in their own way, not a way fans want it to be.

if we take a look at ME2 for example.. the end of that game was HORRIBLE, but it had nothing to do with the choice you made at the end or anything like that..
it was the fact that the end boss basically consisted of what came down to a 100 foot T-800 from the first terminator movie, and a bunch of collector mobs

The tone the previous two games gave us that we can overcome all odds. Even death.

No, you can vote with your wallet, just like with an rpg... Extreme fanservice and 'fan entitlement' ultimately destroy the diversity of the product because, let's face it, the average fan is not really brimming with creativity and innovation.
In short, you don't write a book that ends how Joe likes. You write it how you want to and hope Joe likes it.

*sigh* Yeah. I'll buy it just so I can close the Mass Effect story once and for all. The first two games were a blast, and I bet 3 will be amazing too...up until the ending at least, but thats what fanfics are for.
Yes, but I also like meth and reality television:)

Hence ' overarching ' tone. It was also funny at some points but far from space comedy.

And it was still that we could overcome all odds, even death. Did we know we could die if we half-assed it? Sure, but if we worked our butts off we were rewarded through sheer determination. That was the overarching tone we were given. Suddenly with the third installment it is suddenly not the case. Nothing comes out okay.

This, BY FAR.
Even with the worst ending - we just rush in and try to take it all out as soon as it's possible - we get 90% of the EXACT SAME ENDING as if we completed everything and made the best possible decisions.
The overarching tone is that there's outcomes based on decisions. If I get a lame victory no matter what I do, where's the decision in that? It sounds like it was decided for me a long time ago. I'm glad all the effort and struggle we've been going through accounts for so much, but apparently - as long as I survived ME2 - I was destined for victory in ME3.
