Yet another digital distribution platform.

Why? Just.. why?

I have been looking forward to Mass 3 since the first hour of Mass 2, and now I'm faced with being forced to download yet another digital distribution platform to enjoy the game.

If everyone game developer decides they require their own platform, I'll end up having to run 10 different distributions platforms, at least, and it's in no way simpler or easier for me.

Upon discovering this news, I looked in to physical options - since I liked my Colllectors Edition of Mass 2, but apparently even physical editions will require Origin as well?!

Could someone please explain to me, as if I were five years old, why it's easier and more convenient for the pirates to enjoy the game - whereas I, as a happily paying customer have to suffer?

I don't actually, at this stage, care whether or not it's a Valve or an EA issue - but you guys should step up to the plate and offer your games on the platform that your customers decide they want it on.
The alternative is forcing us to have a membership card to 20 different gyms because they each only have one piece of equipment.

I'm sure this has already been discussed to death on here, apologies for that, but I'm feeling very poorly treated as a customer now.

I agree its kinda of drag to have multiple systems. I do like what steam and origin are however. The days of patch hunting and cd finding are over mostly.

Blame valve, they started this whole dd thing and locking games to one service.
Besides, competition is good.

If you don't like it then don't buy the game. But don't come on here endorsing piracy just because you are in a sulk about Origin. Valve have been doing this for ages and nobody complains when they do it but when EA do everyone is up in arms about it.

So if you don't like it don't play.

I wasn't too happy about Origin but I will say this.

Having used it now for a year I can say that EA's customer service beat's Steam's hands down.

That goes a long way for me. If I have an issue I can live chat or call EA and the people are always cool and always do their best to take care of my issue.

If I have an issue on Steam I have to use an email form and I'm lucky if someone gets back to me within 48 hours.

I'm not saying Origin is better than Steam, but the Origin Customer Service system has been an incredible surprise. They've helped me with multiple issues with TOR and I just hit them up about an issue where I was confused about my pre-order bonuses and they were totally cool with explaining it to me and not brushing me off. And I'm sure today and the next several days are very busy days for them.

Yeah I wish all the games were all under one platform and all that, but, if EA keeps this kind of customer service going via Origin, its going to make Origin a lot more acceptable to me.

It's not really about having a problem or not with the client.....

I already have the Impulse client (now GameStop) - since it's the only place I was able to get Sins of a Solar Empire. Fortunately, they are now on Steamworks - too.
Then i've got Good Old Games - but that's a nice platform as files are downloaded directly as installers, no client required or anything.

Every other game I have is on steam, I've even purchased all my old games on GoG/Steam to have a fully digital games collection.
Steam is awesome as it allows me to keep it on a seperate partition with all the games installed, and it'll even survive computer formats without skipping a beat.

There's absolutely no good reason why Origin is required as a distribution platform, as far as I can tell. I also mentioned that I don't care who's in the wrong on this - I just don't want to suffer for wanting to own my games legally.

MoonDoggie; In what way, shape or form am I endorsing piracy!? I'm saying that I don't understand why it should be less of a hassle to be a pirate than to be a legitimate consumer. That's got nothing to do with endorsing piracy.

Very few games on Steam are Steam only and it's not competition it's exclusivity. You can't choose who provides a game to you with a better service, you are forced to choose the service that has the game you want whether they provide a good service or not. Thats not competition. Steam and Origin both having a game and you choosing who provides the btter service is competition.

It's handy and I can see why EA would want to try their hand at it but it's a pain for the customer having to have multiple installations for each different platform.

It's also a pain for ME3 as these systems(just like Steam) take at least 8 months to 2 years to become stable and reliable. Orign is having problems at the moment so just imagine how bad it's going to get when everyone logs on to download/activate ME3. Origin will collapse under the pressure and things will go mad.

This isn't just Origin(though I hate EA) but Steam had lots of troubles in the beginning so bringing in this new system to the masses just in time for a big launch is probably not a great idea.

ORigin is having problems right now, I have three friends effected they have all been told to wait till a more senior operator is available, they've been waiting an hour now. Steam? No idea No one I know has ever needed to call their customer service in five years of use.

"Don't like it, don't buy it" is a poor argument
He still wants the game it's the platform that's in question.
Piracy is wrong though. No matter what.

I don't care origin exists, I just don't want my personal info on it. EA is not trustworthy. But even if it was, I wouldn't want 10 websites to have my creditcard info on it just because every single publisher wants its own origin/steam.
I never ever buy DLCs I only buy a game or when it's released the ultimate version (I don't mind if the DLCs are packed in my copy but I'll never pay for them separatly). But if I did buy DLC, my credit card info would have been on my sony account when all the data was stolen.
I wasn't so lucky when it was Steam's turn years ago. But all this taugh me that the less place we put our important info... the better.

EA should stop being a tool, and let us purchase on steam.
They want origin? Fine, just don't force us to use it...
Anyway, I opted for the optional way :"Never purchase anything on origin, just buy it at a retailer and register it on origin". Safer. I still need to remember my accounts and the pw though.
And of course I can't use the same login and password as other accounts so it's a pain to remember it all... But what can you do. We are at a time when the customers are getting pushed around by publishers.

The customer isn't king anymore. They won't bend over to earn our money.
We are sheeps, and they make us bend over so that we'll get to give it to them.

I posted that several times already but will do so again...

I hate steam and origin but feel like steam is more user friendly. Unfortunately for BW ME3 is my last purchase as long as they stick to origin. If I'm forced to use one of those platforms then let it be steam (i have few games already there), I don't want origin!

@ Slashout : Very good post, you managed to flesh out the point I was trying to make very nicely!

This. I've never had to use support on Steam, ever. To be fair, I only used to have it to play Counter-Strike when WonID was shut down - so it's quite likely I lived through the "horror" period.
Still, I've been on steam since.. 2003 I think - and not once have I needed to contact support. Everything has just worked. When it hasn't worked, it's usually been the publisher at fault, like Ubisoft and their Draconian DRM meassures - even on a digital distribution platform.

Another worry of mine is that I'll be less likely to replay the game. Often I'll find myself re-downloading a game on Steam that I've finished and want to replay.
With Origin I'll likely install it, play the game, uninstall it and not play Mass 3 again for a good long while. This is what happened with GTA IV and Rockstar's social club. Once it hit Steam I bought it there, too, *and* all the DLC's. DLC's I didn't even know were there because I didn't opt-in to their proprietary platform.
If so, that'll be a first for me - with any BioWare game. And that should mean something, considering I started up with the likes of Planescape and BG.

To reiterate my point about not supporting piracy, feel free to review my Steam profile: http://www.steamcalc....com/id/froberg

Please get off the soap box you're on as you don't know what to do with it.  Your post, in no way, acknowledges anything of what the OP said other than what you clearly misread.

For one, there are people who don't play games on steam.  Making statements that assume that everyone does is wrong.  If you do it, fine, but don't assume everyone else does.  I for one don't play games on steam.  I even got Arkham Asylum for free through the purchase of my gtx 260, but I don't play it and uninstalled it when I saw that I needed Steam as a service to play it.

On topic: I absolutely hate having to download clients to get games I buy.  I hate having to download clients just to play games I buy from actual stores.  The only things I want operating on my computer while I'm doing anything else are my anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities.  This is in addition to anything else I actually open for use like winamp.

I'm currently not using google chrome because it puts a chrome thing on my system bar which means chrome is in use even if I close the browser.  And I desperately want to get rid of that chrome thing so I can get back to using it.

I've now investigated my options more fully.

Gamestop, which is a client I already have two games on, won't sell Mass Effect 3 to me, due to regional issues.
None of the retail outlets available in my country seem to have a physical copy of the game I can purchase, as I did with Mass 2.
The Origin store is somewhat heavily over-charging me. The game would cost me 79,99 USD on Amazon, whilst on Origin the price is 106,5 USD.
I'm assuming here, that even if I did order it on Amazon, I'd still have to use Origin to play it?
The few stores I've found with Mass 3 in a physical format listed, albeit with an unknown delivery date due to "supplier issues", have it listed at 142 USD.

Unless someone can find fault with my math, or direct me to a place of purchase where I won't get ripped off, I won't be buying Mass 3 at this time.

Guess I'll enjoy a long wait for the whole Steam issue to clear up, or for retail copies to become available.

This is *not* what I have come to expect from BioWare. But then, BioWare is perhaps little more than a name at this stage. :'/

I'm very open to any alternative purchase suggestions, should anyone care to offer them.
