I was wondering what view EA/Bioware have on using VPN to unlock the game abit early for those of us who have to wait to the later release date?

Didn't seem to mind with Battlefield 3 and that was the last high profile release...

I am not at all saying I am going to use it that is. It's just a grey area at the moment.

Thanks.

Wouldn't bump if I were you, probably considered spamming and that is against the rules. It's better to just make a new post in the same thread with something relevant to the discussion that isn't just a repeat of it.

Just use it. Region lock is an archaïc practice that should have been abandoned long ago.
The only reason it's here, is because it would be unfair practice to unlock the game before the retailers can sell it (friday in europe).
EA doesn't care as long as you paid for the game.
I for one am going to use it (as soon as my CE box gets here).

I know one bump is enough on any forum. I just know a lot of people would like to know the answer.

Retailers can launch whichever date actually, as proven by Skyrim, worldwide release on 11-11-11.

Worldwide release massively reduce piracy. There should be a lot more.

The only reason we have different release dates for US and Europe still in this day & age is "tradition". Nothing else. Either Europe should just switch to Tuesdays, or US to Fridays and we should have global releases, like movies hit cinemas globally the same day

I suppose the more who claim they will use VPN the more likely that the Origin Release Date will be brought forward a la Battlefield 3.

Yeah if I remember. So many people used VPN they just ended releasing the game for all Origin users there and then. It amazing how easily it was done.

Yes, as you say,  they can, there is no law forbidding an official release date another day of the week. It just takes more preparations to change the custom.
There are just steps that are done more or less "automatically". And to change that, the game needs to have a pull strong enough, and for everyone in the chain from the publisher to the retailed to either adapt, or for the game to be sent one week early in preparation.

It's a bit more work so it's not done often. So usuallly publishers set the official release date friday (in EU) for this very reason.
But well this wasn't exactly where I was going with my first post in this topic :).

Well it should be done all the times, in the end it means more money for the publisher.

Well as many say in the game industry, piracy must be kicked it. If publishers pushed for worldwide release more often then we would be step closer to getting rid of it. Just needs a bit of effort like you said.

Well maybe Publishers have weigh up the two types of release with money in mind.

But lets get back to topic...

Yea I'll be using it 3PM UK time on Monday.

I've done it for Battlefield 3, Kingdoms of Amalur and Syndicate on Origin.

And plenty more on Steam.

As long as you're buying the game in your own country (not using VPN to avoid VAT etc.) then there's no problem with doing it.

http://www.flyvpn.com/freetrial

They have free trial account logins that disconnect every 20 mins. But ME3 unlock will take like 2 seconds.

I've just tested it now. You install the program, use the test account on that page, then select Hong Kong.

When you load ME3 it does the release check, and says it unlocks Monday 5th at 3PM

When you run VPN do you keep it on whilst you play or only for the unlocker? So after unlock you could play multiplayer on UK servers before everyone else?
