They just gave the players the illusion that they had a lot of choices. The auto-dialogues in ME3 are simply cutting out the middleman.

Judging by the footage of Palaven's moon, there were hardly anything worth expanding with dialogue choices to begin with (as Shepard said, they're in a war zone) so I don't really see the problem at all.

This.

This is the most perfect reply I have seen in the 97 pages. And it should be stickied so people would learn something .

You guys keep on bringing up Palaven, but Im talking about the entire game. I've seen everything right up to the point where you take back earth, and 99% of it is automatic character defining dialogue. It's just a TPS now. But people will continue to be in denial until they see it for themselves. Judge it on your own. Make no mistake, the fans won't be easy on Bioware with this, especially after DA2. Bioware makes DA2 look like an rpg compared to Me3.

Polite, have you really seen the enitre game? If so, you've brought a damper down on my somewhat naive optimism.

You know, i really hope this is brought up in reviews. I really do. Just so Bioware can see how much they ****ed up. Seriously, i've never been overly disappointed with any of the transitions from ME1 to ME2.

This really is the absolute worst thing they could've done to the series. And i know this has been said by so many others when gun customization was stripped or exploration was cut, but this is seriously bad. I'd like to think that it's objectively bad, but there are the few out there who enjoy no dialogue.

I hold out hope that this design decision will be met with internet wide scorn. Man i've never been so disappointed by a video game. ****.

There are only so many things the writers could reasonably have Shepard say per every different situation. Since Shepard is just a regular grunt with an unexceptional background, he's probably not going to be giving Shakespeare a run for his money.

@Gibb - I had a small glimmer of hope as well, but up until you take back earth it's the same old 99% auto dialogue. I thought it was in action mode until every 10-20 minutes or so a choice of whether your mad or sad came up.

@Omilophile - look at the videos on YouTube, or play the game if you have it. There are plenty of situations where you could have said something different based on your previous choices/stances in the last two games. whatever Shepard you spent 2 games creating has been railroaded into biowares Marcus Fenix clone.

And there is the problem. Everyone has a different idea about what type of person Shepard really is. It's jarring to hear something you would never choose coming out of her mouth. I still shudder over the LotSB banter with Liara.

Coming back to these forums today has completely killed all enthusiasm I had for this game. Too bad my CE has already shipped. *sigh*

That's very oversimplified.

Illusion of choice is what makes an RPG in the good ones you don't notice it. Of course if you play the game over and over you will eventually pick up on it.
By removing the elements of choice you kill a lot of the replayability of the game since you effectively run the same maze.

I love how many people are butthurt over the fact that Shepard says something instead of the game giving you the choice of saying that something 3 different ways.

To an extent, yes, but you can only choose from three fairly commonplace backgrounds. I do see your point, though. What your character does or enjoys during his/her freetime is up to the player's imagination.

I can understand your disappointment, but is it really cause for not buying the game? That's a bit melodramatic...

Reading all these posts... my heart is actually breaking.

The, "illusion" of player made dialogue doesn't matter. It's the point of making the choice that counts. Something being worded differently 3 times still makes an impact on how your character acts. I just... I can't believe I am reading this. I am so upset right now that BioWare chose to do this... I'm in shock...

I'm not trying to insult anyone , I just feel like the community is beating a dead horse here.

I understand the situation and how much of the RPG element was taken away but all is said and done and unless there next DLC adds more dialogue I doubt it will make anyone happy

I'm just starring the obvious , were all hurt in some way when we don't get what we want , but that's not gonna stop ME from enjoying a game I pay 80$ for. If I insulted polite I am sorry I didn't mean to single anyone out but honestly these threads won't change a thing

I'm spending 80 dollars I really can't afford to spend (hello there maxed Amazon store card) on a game I've been anticipating for years and is shaping up to be extremely disappointing if the spoilers are all true. So no. Not melodramatic at all to say I wish I hadn't preordered.

Well in that case why aren't you in the Baldur's Gate forums?
See I can make passive agrressive insults to.
The point I was making is that I honestly don't belive that RPG hurts from this.  Wether Shepard says Yes, Ok or , sure doesn't hurt the game and I'm confused why it would ruin it for anyone.
I don't play BF3 and why you would assume I do just from my simple post is the real mind boggler. :?

I agree it won't change much for me3. I doubt dlc will rectify the dialogue, it would have to be a serious effort. But nevertheless, after DA2 Bioware was treading on thin ice. That ice has now broken with the gutting of the single greatest feature they had in the mass effect games: the dialogue wheel. I'm still going to play my CE as well, but there's no point in doing more than one playthrough with 99% of the dialogue being exactly the same. Not to mention, it's going to be disappointing enough to see 1 playthrough of my character being forced to conform to Biowares canon Shepard.

Based on his responses here and in another thread, I'm thinking PoliteAssassin is trolling. Yes, there seems to be less choices and more auto-dialogue, but it's not even close to "99%" or 5:1. That's a load of crap.

And if you've just been "watching videos on YouTube," you should wait to actually start playing the game before going around and touting your opinion as fact and frightening people. To be fair, you said "you'll all see for yourselves," but still.
