[How to register Mass Effect 3, and/or activate Online Pass]
On Xbox 360, Online Pass is activated by taking the separate Mass Effect 3 – Online Pass code, provided on a printed insert inside every Mass Effect 3 – Xbox 360 game box, redeeming that code on the Xbox Live code redemption screen, and then playing the game while logged in at least once.
On PS3 this is activated by taking the separate Mass Effect 3 – Online Pass code, provided on a printed insert inside every Mass Effect 3 – PS3 game box, redeeming that code on the PlayStation Network code redemption screen, and then playing the game while logged in at least once.
This bit is bugging me a bit. Is it mandatory that we play the game online before we can register our game?
While I'm perfectly capable of getting online with my PS3, I'll be getting the XBox360 version because I prefer to have all three games on the same system so that I can import saves and stuff. Anyhow, since I don't like Microsoft's XBox Live service, and refuse to upgrade to the new Dashboard, that means I won't be going online with the game unless I decide to repurchase it at a later point on PS3.
There will be an online pass in the box, but like the free Zaeed card I recieved in ME2 it will almost certainly remain unused and valid. I don't tend to worry about 'optional online features' like these in XBox games because it applies to many more games than just Mass Effect and I'm quite used to it - but if I'm reading things properly I'll be unable to use that online pass to register my game on this site until I've activated the pass?
Can't the forum's software (or indeed the EA account software) detect whether an online pass is valid (ie. hasn't ever been used), and activate (tie) the online pass to the user's EA account when entered on this site? This would cause my online pass to become 'used', and I'd still be able to go online with it if circumstances change in the future - while a second hand purchaser wouldn't have a perfectly-valid unused online pass in the box if (for example) something were to happen to my XBox and I have to sell off my games.
It probably can (I'm maybe just reading it wrong), but it seems a bit of an odd decision if it works as it sounds since not every player with a brand new retail copy (and valid online pass) can actually get online or even want to. Some folks for example don't have their own internet connection and browse these forums from an alternative location.
