I find myself relying too heavily on Wynne and Morrigan, and thus I'm missing out on banter between other characters. This play-through I rolled a Dalish Elf Rogue, using the archery line for crowd control. He has herbalism so I can make my own potions, so healing shouldn't be a big deal.

My question is, in your opinion what would be the optimal melee group? I'm considering Alister, Zevran and Shale. I like dual-weilding rogues a lot so I'll be doing a lot of micromanaging for Zev at least.

Any thoughts?

I tried to go Zev, Oghren and Shale for a bit with me also as a rogue. My opinion? It is too hard to micromanage two rogues. They are always decloaking when they shouldn't, failing to position themselves behind their opponents etc. I would seriously consider popping in Oghren or Sten. As a bonus, combining a dark character and a light character usually yields fun conversation. Oghren is the more durable of those choices, so if you go Sten load him up with high armor and defensive runes.

I also really like Oghren. Like Zevran he is simple, but unlike Zev he is good at heart. Zevran's cheeriness is infectious though.

Another thing that some might find distasteful is use of the respec mod for your companions, but I will say that as a sword and board, Oghren is nigh-unkillable. He solo tanked Whitefang when the rest of the party was wiped out quickly. Good thing that he has healing potions in a beer-sipper hat.

If you want the optimal melee group it'll involve Oghren. You'll need to hit Orz up first. Take him dual wield. Oghren, Zev, Lelianna (Second Archer/or melee). Humans are better archers, dwarves are better dual wielders. You want to give everyone one point in poison and max poison on Zev so he can make bombs. Bombs will account for your aoe dps. All melee get dual sweep all archers get arror of slaying and their mass stun.

Ugh, I hate Orzammar but you've got me intrigued.

I do have the respec mod though, I have nothing against using mods in a one player game.

With archery? No problem. Without archery? Major problems.
After overly successful experiences with a team of archers and a duo of mages on Nightmare, I next attempted an all melee team and was promptly (and repeatedly) slaughtered by the first fireball-casting mage I encountered outside of Orzammar.  It was not pretty.

I'm doing one right now, sword and shield me, Alistair, Sten, and Leliana (respec dual wield). I'm pretty dang powerful but Leliana has momentum so.... I think if I respeced my whole party to be dual-wielders it would be much easier. But I'm having fun as it is, shield talents are fun for me. Difficulty normal.

I did have to pull some large groups to separate or pull a mage out because CC is difficult, but if you focus attack one enemy at a time they fall quickly with 4 powerful meleers. It gets a bit crowded at times though.

Amusingly enough, I'm trying this concept except with Arcane Warriors. I have my character, Morrigan, and Wynne all as AWs. Then I have Leliana as a duel wield rogue.

I'm still low level and getting my butt kicked all over the place. I'm hoping to stick with it see if things pick up around level 15.

I beat Flemeth using my DW rogue, Oghren, Sten and Shale. It isn't really all that tough, but you probably shouldn't try it on nightmare.

I just tried 4 melee recently (did a thread about it) - Oghren, Alistair, Shale and my rogue. I set it up just to try something different after I was having a bit of difficulty with the spider boss in Orzammar (darn poison spit), and they dealt with her much easier than my standard team (me rogue, tank, 2 mages). They got right through to the Anvil with moderate ease on Normal, but I've found that ultimately there's just not enough CC with this combo and eventually reverted back to a "standard" setup. I'd say, most of the time, it's definitely viable for Normal - select all and hammer all-on-one, and mobs go down fast - plus it's noisy and a lot of fun to watch and play without too much micromanagement, so if you feel like trying it, definitely go for it.

But as soon as you get one of those really tricksy scenarios, you really start to need the CC/debuffs + AoE damage, and I don't think this combo would work well on Nightmare.

I did the last battle sequence on Hard with 4 melees (Wynne left because of ashes, and I denied Morrigan), and it took 117 health potions.

With planning, I can see it working in most areas - use a high Dex (def) char to do most of the tanking, use archery/combat stealth to pull mobs one at a time. It'd basically be soloing Nightmare with a rogue, except you have 3 others to help with DPS.

Since I'm soloing Nightmare now with a Rogue with 0 archery talents, yes, it can be done. ;)

You can if you position one melee at each summoning circle. You can hit it like once before it teleports again. It's not efficient, but doable. :P

Finished the game with Sten, Oghren, Shale and my PC Tank, so it can be done, even with a non ideal group.

For some more dps i'd replace either Sten or Oghren with Zevran

1. Train everyone into arrow of slaying, 4 people all opening with this from range is pretty much insta kill for anything but a boss, and in general archery is a *huge* help.

2. Train one tier in poison on everyone, max it on one person, use bombs and poisons.

3. Max traps on one rogue with max stealth. Set up ambushes and pull groups through multiple traps to split them up.

4. Get herbalism to at least regular health pots on one character if not max, you're going to need a *lot* of good health pots.

5. 2 "tanks" and 2 rogues is actually quite doable, but a lot of positioning micro management in fights.

6. Wear as much magic resist gear as you can find/buy on your 2 tanks. Magic is what will eat you a new one, especially things like crushing prison. Position your rogue behind mages before you start fights if you have the option, use a trap on them to start the fight, then dirty tricks if not dead once trap wears off.

7. Spec the rogue into Bard. You'll get some CC that way, and it's actually quite powerful and can save your bacon when you get swamped.

Totally doable on nightmare with judicious use of archery, traps, bombs, and bard talents. If you build 2 of the tanks to be min/max damage sponges, it works pretty well. I should post a fraps of mine lol.

All melee, including archery? Flawed logic is flawed.
