I recently read about this, it looks like GAME is in some financial straits and were looking to renegotiate their terms with EA and they said no, hence the abrupt pull of pre-orders. Not sure who to pin this on but I wish you luck trying to pre-order elsewhere.

if that is the case then what idiots? one of the biggest game launches of all time and they cancel orders? fools.

Game are in serious financial trouble and cannot afford to pay upfront for copies of ME3. If EA supply them with copies and Game do go bust before repaying then EA will not get the money for any copies of ME3 sold by game. As such, EA are not supplying any copies to Game. Nintendo and Ubisoft have also not been providing stock to Game.
Game shops usually have insurance to cover them if they can't pay back game publishers but as Game are in so much financial trouble no-one is willing to insure them (or Game cannot afford to pay the insurance).
Whilst it is easy to blame EA here they are only protecting there money. Extra copies of ME3 including N7 edition have been provided to other uk stores to make up the shortfall caused by Game not stocking.

GAME was down 11% on their profit last year.
They have laid off close to 50 jobs in their head and support offices combined.
They are struggling big time cause they are over priced and unfriendly towards publishers.
EB was down 2% too yet JB HI FI was up 3%.
Funny how the business with a better select, better prices and customer service is kicking ass while the other wanna be retailers are still treating their customers like ****.

It's not just EA games, Nintendo and Ubisoft are holding out on Game too. Their credit isn't good anymore. I expect by the end of the summer Game/GameStation will be bought by GameStop... they've expanded all over Europe except for the UK because of Game's stranglehold.
