Finished the pre-load.  Hit launch, I know I can't play yet but what the hell right?  It says that:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running.  Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

I played ME2 on this same computer no problems, no updates.  Will this go away when the game launches or is there some tinkering needed? I have a 64 bit system.

Did you get the Release Date Check popup?

Deleted Origins, and reinstalled, that seems to have helped. Have the release date pop-up now. Thanks guys.

I've got the same problem if I try to launch the game from the icon it put on my desktop:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

The icon on the desktop links to ~Mass Effect 3\\Binaries\\Win32\\MassEffect3.exe.

I'm using 64-bit Windows 7. Mass Effect 1 and 2 and pretty much every other game all run fine for me.

If I try to launch through Origin instead of the desktop icon, I do get the release date check. But launching from the icon, no. I reinstalled Origin and it had no effect. Just trying to troubleshoot this early so I don't start pulling my hair out on release day if I can't play then. rob1595, are you sure you didn't do the icon the first time, and then through Origin when you reinstalled?

Try right clicking on Mass Effect 3 and select "Check for Update".
I did this after downloading and an additional update of 40MB downloaded.

ToRrRrRr, I just tried that and it said I was up to date and didn't seem to download anything, but now when I double-click the icon on desktop, it makes the launch date check happen. So I went into the directory for the .exe the icon links to and sure enough, the date on the file matches the time that I told it to update.

So even though it told me I was up to date, what you said seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks!

Rofl, it said "Up to date" then downloaded a 40 mb update anyway. Here's hoping it solves the problem...
Update did the trick.  If it won't update for you, log out and close origin, then log back in and try the "Check for updates" again.

Release date check is still failed, of course, but heh.  Wait a minute.  What time zone are they in that it isn't---  Oh, wow, I fail at calendars.

I carried out the following steps to get ME3 to work on my Win 7 Ultimate x64 bit OS.

1st: download the 40mb update.
2nd: Carry out a repair installation.
3rd: Right click properties for the ME3 icon. Under properties, select run program in "Win 7" compatible mode.

BTW, if you see any message about running the release date update, just select "accept".

This should work now! :)

Didn't work for me either. I would love to know what is going on and if I'm going to have a major problem when I try to launch the game later tonight after it is released.

Copy/pasting from one of the other threads regarding this topic:

Since Sunday I have been trying to run the pre-loaded installation. As with previous Origin games, I fully expected to see the "Release Date Check" screen pop up...unfortunately, this did not happen. When trying to run the game from the Origin launcher, nothing happens. I get the Windows is busy mouse pointer for about two seconds, then nothing else happens. Even Task Manager is devoid of any ME3 or Origin activity (outside of the Origin.exe process). So, I browse into the ME3 install folder and run the MassEffect3.exe file directly, whereupon I see the error message "Unsupported 16-bit Application". Incidentally, after running the exe, the file resizes down to approximately 21MB and subsequent attempts to run the file result in a different error message (I cannot recall the exact wording). At this point, if I run "Check for Update" for ME3, it will download the 40MB file. If I have not attempted to run the exe, Origin comes back with a "Game is up to date" message and nothing is downloaded.

Steps I have taken to try to remedy this issue:

1) Check for Update (to ME3)
2) Repair installation (of ME3)
3) Uninstall Origin, download the newest version directly from the Origin website, reinstall
4) Uninstall ME3 and redownload/reinstall the game
5) Run the offending exe in compatibility mode
6) Run the offending exe in administrator mode
7) All combinations of the above

So far, nothing has fixed the problem. Now, I have seen it repeated over and over that this won't be an issue since the release date hasn't even passed...except that I (and, from the sounds of things, a lot of other people) cannot even get to the Release Date checker application. Even running the Release Date check application directly from its exe results in nothing happening. Is there any other potential fix that I have neglected to consider?

Some potentially pertinent information:

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit w/ SP1
CPU: i7-2600K
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600

Currently seeing the exact same behavior as Ein. Have tried all the steps as he has, same result, right down to the resizing file.

Are the rest of your Origin folders not on the C: drive?

In trying to keep as minimal a footprint on my C: drive as possible (I keep it as an SSD boot drive), I have my Origin install folder set to my D: drive (an old 320GB HDD) and all games associated with Origin set to install to my E: drive (my 1.5TB games drive).

Hi Ein.

While doing some registry checking, I found something very odd - many, many copies of mass_effect3activation in the securom folder.

I granted admin full access to that folder, and now I'm seeing the release date checker.

Huh, I would not have guessed that it would have had anything to do with SecuROM.  Especially since it hadn't occured to me that SecuROM could make Windows interpret an executable to be a 16-bit program.  When I get home from work, I'll definitely look into the SecuROM angle.  Would hate to miss out on RI Day (Reaper Invasion Day)!

Phatose, just tried out the SecuROM angle...unfortunately, I already had the SecuROM folder set to having full access (regardless of account). So, striking out on all angles here. To quote a wise man "this does not bode well".

Hm. I don't know then. It seemed to me like it was securom failing though, as there were like 17 different Mass Effect 3 unlock files, each timed to another failed attempt to run.

EDIT - long story short, I'm not sure if tech support is able to assist with this one...  I definitely have a bad feeling about this...

Make sure you don't have a weird compatibly mode/forced admin setting on any of your EXE's for Origin or the game itself.

Fadaar, not sure if this is actually going to work, but the last EA tech guy I livechatted with suggested something: clear the offline cache in Origin. Here were his/her instructions:

Please clear the origin cache: 1. In Origin, click the settings gear next to your username on the upper right side
2. Select Settings from the dropdown
3. Click on the ‘Browse Game Installers’ button. A window will appear with folders in it.
4. Shut down Origin
5. Then in the window, double click on the folder with your email address.
6. Delete the file called ‘OfflineCache’
7. Launch Origin again

Additionally, he/she suggested deleting all game installers. I haven't been able to try this potential solution yet, as I'm still redownloading ME3 after a botched/miscommunicated solution. =\\

First I'd like to thank the people who have posted their experiences.  It has given me a good place to start.

I am also having this same issue.  I am currently downloading the install again, which is currently my last thing to try atm.  I hope EA are looking at this issue, but I get the feeling that they really don't care about this.  I base this on the really helpful info I have seen posted by EA reps saying your only options are to reinstall origin, ME3 or the OS.

[RANT Removed]

I don't understand how the demo installed and worked with out issue, but this is failing at the first hurdle.

Dave
