im a straight male and i do agree people need to grow up

Another year, another great game in the Mass Effect series and another idiotic controversy to go along with it. With previous installments, the game has drawn the ire of the “family” crowd who doesn’t believe that an M-rated game should even hint at sex, overlooking the mass slaughter of humans and humanoids that makes up the game’s core premise. Blue alien buttcheeks offend their sensibilities, and as such the barely PG-13 “love scenes” landed the game national news coverage.

Now with Mass Effect 3′s release imminent, an even more dreaded bogeyman has now reared its head: GAY sex. The horror! After two games of featuring man/woman, man/alien and alien/woman love stories, the option now exists to make your Commander Shepard what I believe is the first gay video game lead in history.

Of course, as the word “option” implies, being gay is not mandatory. For the hetero crowd there are still plenty of sultry space women and curvy aliens who share your preferences. Or you don’t have to pursue the romantic angle at all, as the entire relationship side plot is optional in ALL the games.

But now fresh fuel has been added to the fire as the “gay sex” scene from the game has leaked onto YouTube. I have a hunch that it won’t remain online by the time this goes to print, but the reaction has already been chronicled. There are far more dislikes than likes on the video, something usually reserved for those awful reply girl shorts or when people throw kittens down stairs, and the comment section is the most hateful, vile, cesspool of internet ignorance I’ve seen outside of 4chan. A few samples:

“I puked that’s just wrong and disgusting”

Alright, that’s actually about the only one I can print. The general consensus is that Bioware has done the world a great disservice by introducing a gay subplot, and its fans are bent on showing just how immature the video game community still is, despite their ever increasing median age.

If the scene is in any way offensive, it’s only because of how poorly it’s executed and written. To call it a sex scene is like calling a spilled cup of water a tsunami. There’s a hand hold, a kiss that is quickly shoved offscreen, and some shirtless men spooning after a cutaway. The entire thing is laughable, but yet, it causes great offense.

Decision time.

The sheer amount of attention paid to Bioware’s inclusion of this option is just ridiculous, and really shows that we as gamers need to grow up. I supposed I shouldn’t be surprised that the crowd that is continuously calling me a “****got” on Xbox Live isn’t sexually progressive, but still, this is pretty inane, even for them. The gay option remains an “option.” The sex scene is cuddling. The entire subplot probably takes a grand total of ten minutes in a game that’s thirty hours long.

I don’t think Bioware intended to make a political statement with this creative decision. They are simply reflecting reality when designing their game. Ever since day one, they’ve allowed you to make a lead character of any race and any gender. Why shouldn’t sexuality be included in this? Why is sex a controversial element of these games at all? Hate the scripting and voice acting all you want, but as soon as you start claiming that what Bioware has done here is “wrong,” you’ve shown your true colors. Chances are if you don’t wants gays in your games, you probably don’t want them anywhere else either.

Maybe gamers don’t need to grow up. Maybe everyone does.

I never could understand why people cared what someone else did in their bedroom. Even more so in a game.

you really want to know what i think? i think people are to afraid to go to the person themselves and ask the big questions

they always use games music and even films to make there argument and how people are ** exploited** to w/e

for the hell of it im making a bill oreilly shepard and doing a gay romance with him now that would be the biggest middle finger to give fox news

I think its awful that people take offense to the inclusion of such a scene, but I guess my opinion reflects my feelings on homosexuality in general, as it seems to for everyone.

Really, my major complaint with how homosexuality is handled is that the player can choose to start a M/M relationship with Kaidan, but not a F/F relationship with Ashley.

Of course this is all rendered totally irrelevant given the fate of every LI :P

what is funny...is the very first thing you do in your post...is affirm your own sexual preference. It shouldn't even be relevant.

tbh fox is really the only one to attack something like this. other outlets like cnn or msnbc dont even pay attention to it because frankly real world events are oviously more important to cover than a videogame

fox did this all alone in 2007 regarding the whole omg a boobie in me1 : eye roll: even the shrink on there called it porn and i asked myself has she ever watched a porno? lol i mean shoot

I do think its silly that people often feel the need to identify  their orientation first in these types of discussions. I'm not faulting you for it, but xtorma makes a valid point: people in general often tend to open with similar remarks.

As for myself, I usually don't even address my own unless someone flatout asks me what my sexual orientation is, which has happened when I defend issues such as gay rights. I don't think it's necessary to open a discussion with it, or preface an argument by declaring where you, uh...stand, I guess; it'll become clear during the course of the discussion if you're "anti-gay" or not.

I'm a straight dude, and My Shepard is well a in game version of ME! So my Shepard isn't gay.

I think it's about dang time that BW showed some appreciation to fans in that (what is non offensive way to say this? I don't want to offend anyone by using a term deemed offensive so if anyone could help me?) the homosexual fans? Is that a non offensive way of saying it? BW is also given lesbians a human female option (Kelly wasn't really a true romance).

Honestly I'm going to be upset on things that didn't happen in ME3. I mean I want nothing left unfinished and unresolved and that means dealing with the Near Kiss I shared with Samara. I want that to be taken care of and dealt with.

I'd think that we as fans would be far more upset about the things that didn't make it into the game ya know?
But I guess some people are got to be upset with something they have the choice of in ME3.

To be fair, even Fox News really didn't seem to give a **** about the sex scene in ME1.

There was that one lady who called it porn, but even the host thought the game looked cool via the trailers. It was a slow news day.    Besides, Fox has more important things to worry about - like a Mormon or a Catholic possibly getting the Republican nomination.

eh for me i just think it breaks the ice that way no accidental assumptions are made because i have been involved in multiple arguments with both sides

long story short i was accused of being anti gay wich i never was and ever since that i just feel take away the oppertunity of a mistake by just being upfront with it

also imo as a gamer mass effect is a rare franchise because its breaking down barriers people dont understand

theres actually alot to learn from this franchise

I guess it just seems silly to be that you would care about assumptions from strangers on the Internet, or even peopel in real life. Also, by trying to do away with assumptions, you're making it sound as though it would be a negative for people to assume you're homosexual.

Why would it matter if people think you're gay if you're comfortable with your own sexual identity? If they ask you, you can simply say that you aren't. It seems off-putting to answer a question no one has even asked yet at the start of a discussion.

I should clarify, I hope one day society gets to the point where you feel you don't have to do it. All i am saying is we are going to take a lot longer to get there if we keep separating ourselves.

the point i tried to make is not all hetrosexuals or gamers feel the same way as fox does regarding same sex relationships

i mean hey if 2 dudes wanna marry adopt some kids im all for it because if it makes them happy then hey who am i to judge?

and trust me friend i have been called every name in the book and no it dosent get to me.

i dont care if your gay, straight, bi, black white green yellow, etc if your a good person hey i respect you

thats the thing society dosent understand

we are fed all these fears in the media and basicly are being brainwashed by people (fox) who probably never even talked to a gay person before

my question is whatever happened to people being adult and go straight to the horses mouth for answers?

you dont see that anymore

I don't understand what's so mysterious about straight people being turned off by homosexual discussions. The constant droning by some people about alternative sexual orientation can be quite distasteful for those who don't swing that way. I don't start threads talking about my sex life, why do some people think everyone else is anxious to know about other people's sexual predilections?

If you want to sex up a dude, make a female character, if you want to sex up a girl, make a guy character. Sheesh, it's just a game folks.

Oh, I know. I'm sorry if I came off as trying to attack you; that wasn't my intention at all.

I just wish we lived in a day and age when we could talk about sexuality without having to immediately defend what we say by declaring our own sexuality. It's just one of those deeply personal things (going along with religion and politics on some level) where people feel the need to justify where they stand in case attacks are leveled against them.

i know right?

im gona be honest here and say this......

i use to be terrified of gay people until i maned up and went to a gay bar

and you know what i realized?

they are no different than me or anyone else

after that i did question why does the media and religious groups make up some of the most disgusting lies?

In b4 Fox runs a headline that reports that every installation of ME3 opens a satanic wormhole to Homosexualandia and releases a highly virulent strand of The Gay.
