Could Valve be releasing a console?

The interesting bit from this read is who Valve wants to take on.
"The most interesting piece of this puzzle may be related to that statement. According to sources, the Steam Box isn't intended to just clash with current gaming consoles. Rather, Valve wants to take Apple and its forthcoming new Apple TV products head-on."
"Additionally, there won't be a required devkit, and there will be no licensing fees to create software for the platform."
I could this being a good move to get studios to develop games.
This is only a rumor but if this happens I would like to see how Valve would shake things up.

This would be an awesome opportunity for independent game developers if it's true.
On the 360 I know indie devs have a hard time. Not only do sales tend to be much worse than PC counterpart but Microsoft does a terrible job at even giving them decent promotion compared to Steam.

Valve will need to secure a few killer exclusives to draw eyes to their platform.
I wouldn't be surprised if Half Life 3 was delayed just so it could be a launch title for a Valve console that would obviously get alot of people to buy it.

According to sources, the company has been working on a hardware spec and associated software which would make up the backbone of a "Steam Box." The actual devices may be made by a variety of partners, and the software would be readily available to any company that wants to get in the game.
Adding fuel to that fire is a rumor that the Alienware X51 may have been designed with an early spec of the system in mind, and will be retroactively upgradable to the software.
Apparently meetings were held during CES to demo a hand-built version of the device to potential partners. We're told that the basic specs of the Steam Box include a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GPU. The devices will be able to run any standard PC titles, and will also allow for rival gaming services (like EA's Origin) to be loaded up.
Part of the goal of establishing a baseline for hardware, we're told, is that it will give developers a clear lifecycle for their products, with changes possibly coming every three to four years. Additionally, there won't be a required devkit, and there will be no licensing fees to create software for the platform.
With these specs it will end up very expensive.

I really like what they're doing with it if it's real but it will probably be expensive (More than a PS3 on launch?) and it needs a better name than Steambox

I like this. I think we could use some more competition between the consoles.

For Valve this will be their Atari Jaguar it'll be an expensive and useless venture that kills the companies reputation. Not only in the fact they'll have a failure to their name but they will alienate their core fanbase by trying to move over to the console fanbase.

Sounds pretty nice actually, though I hope HL3 wouldn't be exclusive to it, we could do with some more competition than just nintendo/sony/microsoft, they've stagnated console game technology for years now (it's 7 years out of date now) lets just hope the 'steam box' doesn't add to this problem.
Do you honestly believe that Valve would not do that? You already can't play their games without having their client installed so i can imagine they'll use their games to get people to buy their console.

If it gets put into the console tier I have a feeling that someone would get hit hard.
Keep in point I'm in the area of where the market can't really sustain a lot of consoles, lately whenever we go over 3 someone gets put down (TurboGrafx, Neo Geo, Sega, Apple etc)

I meant exclusive to the console itself and not pc. I know it would be exclusive to valve if they brought out a console, I mean it's an easy way of them getting money. People have waited patiently for years for HL3 to come out and when it does the catch is you have to buy a new console to get it.

I'd like to buy a pre-made PC that valve I guess "Made" (Save me the worry and time of building one myself). Throw a HL skin on that puppy and I'm sold.Celrath wrote...
It seems more like Valve is standardizing gaming PC specs then Coming out with a whole new console, basically they will probably start giving out Case stickers-- like with microsoft amd and intel-- that say Steam Compatible and they will update the specs on a few year life cycle.

I don't see why they'd make a console personally. Why not just make their own brand PCs? I mean from what I am hearing the thing seems to act like a PC.
Gabe also said he'd rather leave the hardware to well the hardware guys.

EA has already declared war on Steam, I don't think they would allow any of their titles to be released on this system. As much as I love PC gaming I just don't think there enough people in this community that would buy this system in support of Valve if they couldn't play their favorite games on it.
If Valve sinks too many resources into this project it could cause a massive HL3 delay (which would be a criminal offense) and could jeopardize the company's fiscal standing in the future.
