I don't see why they'd make a console personally. Why not just make their own brand PCs? I mean from what I am hearing the thing seems to act like a PC.

Because the market has some saturation in that respect for PCs, and its not gaming centric. Additionally consoles require much less in the way of keeping current, if you prebuild and market PCs, you have to continually upgrade and keep current with the market and of course do all the necessary modification/updates.

This would be interesting and I would go on-board, only if modding were allowed on the console. Honestly though, Valve would have a tough go of it, since MS can throw way more money at their system than Valve could ever muster (MS made about $17b in pure profits last fiscal year). If they allowed such on their possible system, you can bet Sony and MS would fall in-line and allow the same (they already get enough requests to allow such as it is). Just look at how well Skyrim sold on just the 360 and PS3, those are shooter sales numbers and you can bet MS and Sony will be considering this, especially if it increases sales of RPGs, where that genre tends to sell the least of all in general.

Also, so many 360s/PS3s/Wiis are already in households that the market is fairly saturated, so you can bet Valve will consider that as well. It would be seriously difficult to get publishers and developers aboard while also possibly alienating hard core PC gamers while also considering the current console install base.

Still though, I would love this to be honest as I really like console gaming, it just lacks in a few areas (graphics and
modding mainly), but the gaming community for online gameplay is really fun. Also consider the expense of that console, if going by those specs. The PS3 was seriously criticized for its initial release price ($599 for 60GB model). With PC hardware getting cheaper, that would be a hard sell since one can get a decent rig for $600 (if going by the PS3 initial price point).

This would be an awesome opportunity for independent game developers if it's true.

On the 360 I know indie devs have a hard time. Not only do sales tend to be much worse than PC counterpart but Microsoft does a terrible job at even giving them decent promotion compared to Steam.

I'm with AshedMan in seeing this an amazing opportunity if the folks at Valve play their cards right. If nothing else it's an innovative approach that may force other console developers to change how they approach game development and distribution.

The one sticking point is there hasn't been a console cycle yet with four dominant platforms. There can only be three. :P One company will probably fail spectacular if Valve goes through with this; and being the new kids on the block, the onus is on them to highlight why people should buy their system over the next Xbox or whatever.

Calm down, it's just valve trying to make PC gaming appear more user friendly for the consoletard crowd. The article said nothing about making PC gaming more of a closed platform, they're most likely gjust thinking about making a Valve box with Steam, big picture, and to make it compatable with Valve endorsed and marketed hardware upgrades (like Microsoft was supposed to do...) every 4 to 5 year cycle.

If true, I'm excited for it if only because I can drink the tears of the PC elitist crowd as one of the golden boys of PC gaming (and I say that in an entirely positive way) tries their hand at a console.

Frankly I'm all for this. Why the PC elitist would get mad at something like this is dumb. If succesful this could maybe have a positive impact especially "console hardware holding us back" thing.

Yes, an announcement like this will definitely expose some of the dumber gamers who fail to see how this could benefit PC gaming. I'm sure that nVidia and AMD would be ecstatic at having Valve bring back high end graphics to PC gaming.

I love the idea, but I would be concerned that the system might not get enough third party support to make it economically viable in the long term.

EA has already declared war on Steam, I don't think they would allow any of their titles to be released on this system. As much as I love PC gaming I just don't think there enough people in this community that would buy this system in support of Valve if they couldn't play their favorite games on it.

If Valve sinks too many resources into this project it could cause a massive HL3 delay (which would be a criminal offense) and could jeopardize the company's fiscal standing in the future.

It would be a massive risk, and the gaming industry isn't in the best shape as well for the platform creators, its hard to say whether it would be a good move or not, but if it openned their platform to more titles, I'm for it.

I think it would be cool if you could install mods for games on it too. A la skyrim

I love the steam workshop even though I have not used it yet (no skyrim on pc and never have any stuff to craft with in tF2). Also that's a BA hat.

I appreciate Valve as a company but have no interest in this personally. Never saw the point in having a box that just sits around to play games on.

Some good reading over at Kotaku.

Is This Valve’s Control Pad Design? The images sure look good if it actually has a lot of options. Who doesn't want the ability to switch out analog sticks, trackballs etc?

My Java doesn't work properly, so I can't do a damn on BSN except commenting. I hope they create something better than Java and Flash. Both are crap.

Though, having said that, if it looks like a Companion Cube, I’d pay almost anything for a Steam Box.

If what the rumors say is true, it'd essentially just be a gaming PC for use with TVs. The rumors even say it'd be open source. How could anyone think this would be bad? It's bloody genius. It's still a PC. It would open the superior world of PC gaming to everyone who is intimidated by PCs or prefers to play with a simple plug-and-play style of a console.

The potential is absolutely enormous.

This right here. I've no interest in building a PC and/or learning about how it's parts work, but a "gaming PC" designed for your TV with a simple plug in and play style really interests me.

:)
