Can't purchase ME3 due to language restrictions in Origin

Hello.

A serious issue with Origin Store ME3 purchase options keeps me from ordering Mass Effect 3, and ultimately from playing the game when it's released.

Writing here is an attempt to bring this issue to the attention of BW staff members who might be able to change the situation.

As it stands, ME3 for PC is only available through EA Store (Origin). Origin functionality depends on the country you live in, which in my case is Russia. You can only view your "local" version of Origin Store (in the native language of your country). Worse, some purchase options are restricted depending on your location.

When you choose a game (i.e. Mass Effect 3) and proceed to checkout, you have an option to choose language for it. For people who live in Russia, Mass Effect 3 is restricted to Russian language. This is unbelievable, and unacceptable.

Screenshots of ME3 purchase options: language selection; the only option is Russian.

For comparison, screenshots of ME2 purchase options: language selection; you can choose English.

I only play games in English and this is very important to me; double important for Mass Effect since it's a continuous series of games. This language restriction, completely uncalled for, prevents me from puchasing and enjoying the most anticipated installment in the series. For an avid fan like me, who's put hundreds of hours into ME2, and runs a Mass Effect Q&A fansite, this is heart-shattering. I also suspect I'm not the only one who's affected.

I reiterate: this problem prevents some ME fans from purchasing Mass Effect 3 and from being able to play it. It's in the interests of both Bioware and consumers to get it fixed. For BW staff members who happen to read this: please take steps to get it fixed. Thank you.

P.S. I very well understand that this forum is not a place to request official technical support, and I contacted the official support team at help.ea.com before posting here. I've been exchanging messages with them since February 15, provided a couple of detailed explanations of the problem, and there's still no progress in getting it resolved. I hope Bioware cares enough about players/customers to take attention to this matter. Ideally before the release date.
Thank you in any case, for making the most awesome games in the whole industry!

P.P.S. Fellow forum dwellers, please don't suggest me to use VPN, hack game files, or order ME3 from another country. Customers should not have to resort to machinations to get what must be provided by the game publisher in the first place. Especially not when the product is digital and all they need is flip a switch.

You have my sympathies. I would be seriously disappointed if I'd need to play ME3 with some Finnish voice actors instead of the original ones.

EDIT: I might also be a bit reserved to buy a copy with a "weird" localization because of what happened with Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC 1½ years ago. Some people couldn't get it because of their localization even if something different was promised earlier.

I suppose the grey option is to VPN to a european country and order it like that -- since it would think you're in europe you could then probably buy an english copy.

Russian version will have English voices only, and Russian subtitles/text only. It might be possible to put .tlk file with needed language text in BIOGame folder and change language in in-game options menu.

I second this. I'm also Russian, and I would never buy ME3 in any other language than the original; I'm just lucky that Origin doesn't force any localization on me in my current country of residence, which is India. But I know that some of my friends in Russia won't buy ME3 because they only want original VA. Seriously, what's EA's gain in not allowing people to buy a game in any language they want if it's available in that language? And I know that other games in Origin allow you to choose different languages when you buy them.

@LexXxich. Even if you can prove this info, it doesn't matter if only a part of the game is localized (which makes the localization even worse). We need a choice to get the original version, full-fledged with English VAs and interfaces. We shouldn't have to hack our games to get access to the original language, not in the world of digital distribution. Most importantly, there is no reason for these restrictions, and they hurt everyone involved.

@seph22. This is a short-sighted solution.

First off, it's not something we, the customers, should have to do. It's the responsibility of the content provider to offer the product we want, and it's our responsibility, as consumers, to refrain from buying product that doesn't offer us what we want. If you put up with this restrictional policy and use hacks etc. to get the right version of the product, all you get is more crap like this in the future.

Second, there are DLCs, which go through Origin now. There's no telling if those will works with my version of the game. Am I supposed to order them from US, too?

Please don't invent hackish short-term solutions for problems that didn't have to exist in the first place, and should be solved by talking sense into the publisher, to prevent other people from suffering this problem, and more of this happening in the future. Support my initiative and spread concens about regional restrictions, and you might save yourself a lot of trouble next time you're forced to hack your game or order it from another country because some bureaucrat somewhere decided you're not entitled to the original version of digital content you pay for.

What could BW do at this point? Everything is already arranged and EA who runs Origin just isn't going to do ****, let's face it. I don't know what holds BW with EA but they need to drop this mediocre publisher as soon as they can.

My experience with RU EA so far:

- IVR for Moscow EA support line just drops calls after saying 'All reps are busy, please call again later'.
- My ticket about ME3 not showing in Origin after pre-order is pending without reply for 3 weeks.

I AGREE with you but I'm like you, they don't offer me the english version from where i live so my solution is buying from amazon and it works for me, getting DLC is not an issue for me i use VPN to get around that

They are forcing us into doing such things it's not like we are given another option.

I second this, I don't even understand why would a publisher try so hard to prevent people from buying a game. Right now the only option to play the game(unaltered by dodgy localization) is guess what. And bioware won't even respond to this to clear up the situation as if it was beneath them to do so. Oh well.

Totally agreed. But I'm sure even if ME fans would make some sort of petition, EA still won't do anything. And this is stupid on so many levels. People spend their money on product, which is provided by EA Games and have to face this kind of problems. And after that publishers will spit some rubbish "oh, blah-blah-blah, level of piracy nowadays, blah-blah-blah, we lose money". So, may I ask a question: EA, what were you thinking?

Imagine basic dilemma-situation, when person (doesn't really matter ME fan or not) is trying to make a decision about buying product or download it from some torrent. Basically he has only two options:

1) He download ME3 from torrent. Absolutely free. Any version he want, any language/region he want. No problems with delivering/ordering/calling tech support etc.

2) He want to support game developers and buy actually legitimate product. And... oh-oh. Here you go - the list of problems/questions you should first take care of before you can actually play the damn game.

And with this two options what obvious choice customer will take?

How EA can hope to get any share of the digital market not even offering language selection is beyond me.
This is the last time I ever buy something on Origin.

You know, I've heard a lot of stupid things about EA Origin... you can't join friends' games, the software slows your PC down... all nonsense. But THIS issue tops it all.

Month ago Chris Priestly said that there will be language selection inside game:

http://social.biowar...3/index/9069189

Seems he made a mistake or lied. It's exactly the same as with Battlefield 3 - theres regional lock and language restriction. Only Russian VO's are downloaded via Origin. For the moment you can't check audio selection but judging by the size of the game folder - it has just one language.

EA - you lied and mistreated me yet again...
