The demo booted up fine, I got through the character creation steps no problem, and performance in-game is looking great, Fraps reporting a silky smooth 60+ frames per second. The problem comes when I finally get control of Shepard for the first time on the rooftops. Whenever I keep my view still or only move it around very slowly, the framerate continues to flow at a very stable 60 frames, but the moment I move my mouse around more quickly, the performance takes a massive dip to below 5 frames, and continues to do so while I am moving the mouse around rapidly. This renders the game horrendously unplayable for me.
Initially I believed that the issue was with the motion blur effect in the game, as I have sometimes experienced framerate dips due to motion blur shaders. I manually disabled the effect using the config.ini and tried it again. Same issue. I decided to leave it a while, update all my drivers and come back to it at a later time.
It was on my recent attempt to play the demo that I noticed that the framerate wasn't just dipping while I was running around shooting. I don't normally move the mouse around much when dialogue scenes are playing out, but in a spur of the moment fumble with the mouse, I noticed the framerate took yet another massive dip, despite no camera motion of any kind happening because of my movements. I experimented further, going out to the main menu where by all rights moving a mouse should have no impact on the performance. Upon just moving the mouse up and down at the title screen, Fraps recorded a familiar dip in performance, the game barely managing 10 frames per second. As soon as I stopped moving it, 100+ frames.
This is one of the most bizarre performance bugs I have ever encountered in a game, and it's quite surprising considering both Mass Effect 1 and 2 ran flawlessly. I hope this issue has already been addressed come launch of the full game, because I'd hate for such a stupid bug to ruin any attempts at continuing Shepard's journey.
For your reference these are the specs I'm currently running the demo with:
Intel Q6600 CPU
GeForce GTX260 896MB
4GB DDR800
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Logitech G9 Mouse
If anybody has any ideas on the cause of this problem, and how to fix it, please let me know!
