Doesn't matter, you lose your LI anyway in all endings. If anything he was doing you a favor, if only he killed him/her. That would have totally given Bioware more sad drama to force down their fans throats.

Kai Leng is an assassin who will not only try to kill your sweetheart, but can kill Wrex, Miranda, Thane, and several others. You can save them, though.

Saving them isn't really doing them a favor. At least Kai Leng would have ended them on the spot in mortal kombat. Much quicker and cleaner that way.

Kai Leng is the Illusive Man's top assassin. He first appeared in the novel Mass Effect: Retribution, where he was ordered to hunt down and capture former Cerberus operative Paul Grayson. He succeeded, but through a combination of the Illusive Man's petty sense of revenge and David Anderson's "treasonous" decision to give Grayson's "insurrence intel" to the turian military in an effort to deal as much damage to Cerberus as possible, Grayson was subjected to horrid experiments with Reaper technology and then unwittingly released into the galaxy as a cybernetic "avatar" of the Reapers. Kai Leng's job after that was to hunt down and exterminate what Grayson had become, and to retrieve the body.

He succeeded in killing Grayson, although not by himself; it was more a combined effort on the part of both him and Anderson. Anderson wasn't about to let Kai Leng go, however, not least because Kai Leng's shenanigans resulted in a kid being shot in the gut. Faced with a choice between "let him go," "kill him," and "let the kid die," Anderson opted to shoot Kai Leng in the legs and hope he didn't have enough time to escape while they tended to the student's health. This plan didn't exactly work; Kai Leng was fit and stubborn enough to make his way to an escape shuttle and take off using only his arms to get himself there.

Kai Leng is extremely proficient at the art of killing. With the element of surprise on his side, he can utterly slaughter multiple armed opponents with nothing but a knife and his own considerable hand-to-hand ability. He does appear a bit more of a "cyborg ninja"-type character in the Mass Effect 3 promotions we've seen so far, which wasn't the case in Retribution, but there you go...

Kai Leng also played a large role in the recently-released Mass Effect: Deception novel, but that book not only butchered the series lore, it also butchered Kai Leng's personality as well. Kai Leng is, among other things, very much a racist and xenophobe--the perfect representative of the darker mindsets behind the human-supremacist organization known as Cerberus.
