This thread is disturbing. A few people are showing they want to bonk their sisters.

Yeah, it is.  Just because third cousins may produce inbred offspring at a heightened rate in comparison, compounding the problem even more quickly, is not a good thing.

Same article as above:

Inbreeding depression is not a phenomenon that will inevitably occur. Given enough time and a sufficiently (but not too) small gene pool, deleterious alleles may be eliminated by natural selection and genetic drift.Under most circumstances, this is a rare occurrence though, as the gene pool cannot become too large (thereby increasing the odds of new deleterious alleles appearing through mutation) nor too small (resulting in outright inbreeding depression). Among island endemic populations, however, a high resistance to inbreeding depression is often seen. These derive from very small initial populations that must have been viable, and panmixia in the early stages of speciation was usually thorough. This will result in a very comprehensive elimination of deleterious recessive alleles at least. The second type of inbreeding depression – caused by overdominant heterozygous alleles – is impossible to eliminate by panmixia. However, local conditions may result in an altered selective advantage, so that the fitness of the heterozygous genotype is lowered.

You can force the loss of deleterious alleles through genetic manipulation and selective breeding. Again - we're dealing with a work of science fiction here.

Just trying to clear the air of Doom and Gloom here. People are assuming the worst and overthinking the issues here. It's fiction, guys.

Keywords being Science and Fiction. As science, this is a very unpleasant destiny for the Normandy crew. As fiction, this is a very unpleasant heterosexual fantasy. It's unpallatable on both counts.

Really! I refuse to let Ash become a breeding machine for the Normandy crew. Better to let her die on Virmire then to suffer that fate.

As science, Gene Therapy and Gene manipulation are a both probable solutions, we've just not developed them yet because Imbreed Depression is not a concerning issue.

In fiction, there could be any number of crew members or other crashed ships/refugees.

We could go back and forth on this forever, but the point is - this shoulden't be our issue to answer. Bioware should have created a better Epilogue.

If Adam and Eve found a way, I'm sure the Normandy's crew can!

Wait a sec...

Ugh. Inbreeding talk. No wonder the Internet think BioWare fans are crazy.

No one knows where the Normandy ends up - for all we know, they could have simply came back to Earth.

Is it mean of me to like the fact that you just referred to Creationism as a work of fiction?

I don't think Bioware is that cruel. Just wait till the games comes out Image IPB

Edit:  To make you feel beter, A girl I know has done a interview with Kim Brooks and Kim herself said that Ash doesn't sleep around.

Trust me, Ash would never allow herself to be used like that.

...I stared at this for a moment before bursting out laughing and the ludicrousness of these statements.  Inbreeding, especially when dealing with such a small genetic [puddle], will result in severe inbreeding depression.  Inbreeding depression in humans can produce offspring with physical deformities, severe mental retardation, infertility, and a host of genetic disorders.

You people watch too much Hollywood. All the above can and does happen even without inbreeding, unfortunately. But even with todays medicine every cripple who can barely walk will survive. Inbreeding is an irrelevant factor in our world, its a leftover from stoneage, designed to encourage spreading genes for more diversity, not for more health. Thats a difference. And in Mass Effect you have Miranda, a completely artificially created human out of her father, you cant go less diversification than that, yet she is gorgeous and perfectly healthy, so think where the error in your logic is. Humans are a incredibly homogeneous species anyways, we have very little diversity compared to animals, so crossbreeding works. Btw "1 in every 200 men are direct descendants of Genghis Kahn". That guy surely did not waste time. And asian population still exists? Heresy.

Now this is just stupid, what do you think will happen when aliens breed with humans(assuming it is possible). 5 fingers supermodels? But remembering that you think that Gears of War is a PC game ported to console, i have no further questions.

Did anyone stop to think even with the relays they could quite easily get back to they're planets? Krogan DMZ isn't that far from SOL and reapers had very advanced tech meaning they're ftl drives could get them from Dark space to a system in weeks/months.

****ing stupidy on this forum is amazing.

Nothing will happen. Same reason people can't mate with sharks and expect to see mutant hybrid babies.

What are you talking about, Gears of War? When did I ever say it was a PC game ported to consoles? I remember saying the 1st one was ported to PC, but not the other way around.

You are correct, they still FTL, its like living in a world where we all suddenly lost our cars, ariplanes and other methods of quick travel...

Thats kind of harsh..

Look at it like this. Ships are built with stores that plan for Relay travel. Either you will end up with skeleton crews and huge stores of food. Or there just won't be any food after the relays go boom. It's a bit like packing rations for a week then finding out the trip will last a month.

The Geth could probably ferry people in stasis, but that assumes they are still around.

Like said, please try to use logic. Direct facts from ME say different as asari marry other species and produce babies. Matriarch Aethyta is an asari-krogan child. So how is she a "nothing". A human-asari child, will certainly not look like Miranda, unless genetically manipulated to be made whatever his parents want him to be. Inbreed or not.
