9/10?

Each to their own I guess.

So, unsurprisingly the game is buggy and obviously not AAA. But story would be the only reason to buy it (I won't consider it until it is about 10-20 bucks, myself.) Does the story actually carry weight to justify buying it eventually?

From what I have heard it is really good. While I love the Uncharted series, not every game needs to have a billion dollar budget. While the "every game needs to be 60 dollars" model is definitely broken, I feel much better buying this full price than a game with on disk DLC, the biggest misnomer in gaming today.

I've always been highly suspicious of the game, but the IGN review is a joke. Not a word on quests (just fetch quests and fighting? More elaborate? Multiple solutions?), character system (skills? levels?), game world (small, big? Day and night cycle? NPCs with daily routine? free roaming?), C&C (if there is any, that is), characters (interesting, deep, flat, boring?)

The issues which, according to them, make the game downright BAD are lackluster graphics, repetitive combat, annoying bugs and bad voice acting.

The first two could be applied to, say, DA2, and the last two to Oblivion, (two games which got a radically different treatment from IGN, of course).

My point is that maybe the game is indeed bad, but from that review I honestly don't know if it's garbage or maybe a rough gem still worth playing (like Risen 2 or Alpha Protocol), because bugs can be patched, graphics are not that important, bad voice acting is a pain but doesn't ruin a game and boring combat I can still bear if the game has other qualities (see DA2). That's the kind of sloppy review and disdainful treatment non-AAA developers get.

Funny you mention that Pedrak. I noticed that the IGN review was just seething with bias and no holds barred critique that you pratically never see them do for a more well-known AAA developer. Hit or miss AAA developer titles always get the benefit of a cushioning.

Non-AAA developers get a flat out "This game is retarded. Don't buy it." while AAA developers get "Except for a few minor faults, this game is worth checking out!"

Meh didn't mean IGN but that is no surprise even some minor AAA titles get smacked around by them like Binary Domain was. So far the scores are on average between 4 and 6, I've seen one 10, but I question that one highly.

Basically IGN unless its an older game is no longer a valid reviewer imo. Throw enough money or early behind the scean stuff at them and you'll get no lower than a 9.

Got the game today. Just running around a town called Riversping as the Red Priest guy (Alester). It's an alright game to be honest. Wouldn't recommend it over other RPG's out there but if you're a fan of the ASOIAF universe and don't mind a flawed game there's a lot of fun to be had. Would proably give it a 6 or 7. Not half as bad as IGN makes it out to be.

See a 7 or 6 is a game I might play if the game type is one I like, but in that case I always pick it up used cheap or bargin bin new. 60 bucks is just too high for a "I like" title.

LOL. I guess Atlus didn't pay IGN enough money to give it a better score - perhaps Cyanide should've ****d themselves out to EA or Activision instead.

That's a good idea. The game is very rough round the edges and maybe I'm a bit biased as I love the Books and show. I'm also really accepting of flawed games, I mean I enjoyed Alpha Protocol, Two Worlds 2, KOTOR 2 and Risen 2 all of which had a ver mixed responce and were also critisised for being rushed and rough round the edges game.

Yeah out of those I only liked Kotor2, Also a GoT books and show fan. However, most games based on stuff likethat fall flat. I stll plan to get it and Dragons Dogma, but year or two later when both are cheap, and in the laters case when it has a collectors edition with all the DLC on it.

I'm sad to see this game get bad reviews (so far). I just remembered about 10 minutes ago that it had been released... I might pick it up after the price drops? I was also going to pre-order it, but I forgot. Oh wells.

At least we have GoT on Sundays... well only for a couple more weeks. Crap. Hurry up GRRM.

Despite all the bad rep the game got, I just finished it (accumulated leave, hooray!) and loved every second of it.

The graphics may be not up to date, the voice acting may be bad and the combat system to slow paced and too "old school" for some people but that really didn't bother me and the story made up for all of that, if you ask me.

Anybody else on this board who already finished the game? Would love to discuss the story a bit. With spoiler tags of course! I don't want to ruin the superb story for other people who want to play the game.

One of many reasons I don't trust IGN at all. But it's not just them. Many reviewers never go into any kind of details about how the game they're reviewing actually works.

Save system, health (does it regenerate?), skills, leveling, customization, new game+ options, and lots of other things I can't remember right now. Sometimes it just seems like a lot of reviewers don't really care about the things gamers want to know.

Clearly a lot of them have barely even finished the game they are reviewing. Maybe they just read about the ending somewhere if they even bothered to do that.

Haven't finished yet, although I think I'm approaching the end.

I wouldn't say that I loved every minute so far, but it is a way better game than what the reviews had me thinking.

Granted, the visuals and voice acting are like something from 7 years ago, but the game is at least solid. I'm glad I bought it.

It's actually the first game that I played in german in a long time, since it's not making a difference. The english version is even worse, imo.

The only good VA's in the german versions are people like Jeor Mormont and Cersei Lannister, because they are spoken by the VA's from the TV show.

May I ask in which chapter you're right now?

The main characters, especially Mors, are not that bad but they are pretty uneven. About half the time the tone of the voiceover doesn't fit the situation. In my opinion anyway.

I'm in Chapter 8 I think. How many are there actually?

Things I liked so far:

* Two characters. Similar to the book and it does show you two different types of gameplay at the same time.

* Low magic world. Again, faithful to the books and it does show that you can have a fantasy RPG without mages jumping out of every bush.

* Combat system. Heavily inspired by DA:O I'd say, just for a smaller party and without a full time stopping pause. I rather like the active pause system, it does allow you some time to make decisions while at the same exerting some time pressure.

* Character traits. I liked the Alpha Protocol system of awarding perks for various game choices and GoT copied it pretty well.

* Story. The usual depressingly violent and bleak Game of Thrones type of story. Not for the faint of heart.

16 + epilogue. But the last three are rather short. Not "hurry, we have to release the game!" short, just short :D

They nailed the story, and that's really all that matters for a Song of ice and Fire game.

Did they?

I'm curious, is there a reason why the PCs both had to be male?

Because it doesn't make sense to have a woman warrior fighting in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros? You know well Brienne is an exception. The story's protagonists are both knights, bannermen of Tywin Lannister and they both fought during Robert's rebelion.

As for them nailing the story, yes they did so very well. George himself reviewed the script and worked with Cyanide to make a story that would actually fit well in the Universe and timeline. There's also the voice actors for Varys and Jeor Mormont in the english version.

It does not follow the show universe, but rather the book one although there are things that visually look like from the show.
